This brings back memories of going to hobby shows as a kid and looking at the elaborate model railroad displays.
That's a pretty nifty looking model with the Shinkansen and all, but I would have thought Japan, the land of miniaturization, could have come up with something a just a tad more impressive.
It sort of pales in comparison with what the Germans and other countries have done (maybe they have more time for hobbies...).

Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany takes up 6,400 m2, with the actual model taking up 1,150 m2 (and it's a work in progress).

One of the things killing me is that now the level of detail attained for the secondary scenery (roads, cars and trucks) is higher than what we could do for the train themselves in the 80'. Back then cars for the N scale 1:160 were merely blobs of plastic that would sort-of look like what they were supposed to be. Now the cars are perfect copy of the model up to the model-year variations. And the road vehicles are either remote controlled or at least independently moving.

Also... back then... japanese import were priced at the same level as German made Marklin or Fleishmann... when I arrived here and saw that you could have a full convoy for the price of pocket change from your last happy meal... god I wuz pissed...

-Now hates N scale (cats tends to treat them as THEIR toys...)
-Japan don't seems to like anything except N scale...
-aside for the few garden train sets...
-Wants to return to the hobby... but already too many hobbies...

Between the standard ugliness of japanese trains (even the Russian don't go that utilitarian on their trains or trucks) and the pack of butterfaces... I'm not sur I wanna go dere...

I think even the routine hobbyists put the Japanese version to shame.

The article calls the J-model a "georama" (whatever that is) but it looks like an architect's model rather than an actual diorama so I'm a bit peeved at the use of -orama.

Hated it then, hate it now.
HO scale was always better since matchbox cars were the same scale and you had little people that actually looked like people (rather than tiny blobs of plastic).
