I'll never understand how "Gravure" magazines and albums are marketable in Japan.

I think that's a different chick. Bloomberg spelled her name wrong. It should be Miyu Uehara.

Yeah, OK, I admit I was being a bit harsh. Needless loss of human life is always tragic, as you say. What I probably should have said is that I normally don't give it more than a moment's notice. People top themselves all the time (I have personally known a few people who have taken that route for various reasons ... I'm sure others here have as well), and I just don't think a selfish brat "idol" is worthy of more grief than anyone else. Certainly not to the extent that the media makes it out to be. But in Uehara's case I thought it was very unfortunate because of her image and the youngsters who looked to her for inspiration.

People should probably find a better role model. I'm not saying she didn't work hard to get where she was, but she only got therebecause she was lucky enough to be born pretty.

She certainly wasn't ugly, but I don't think she was what you'd call "gorgeous" (my opinion, of course ... apologies to rabid fans). I think it was more of a character thing. If kids, good looking or not, were motivated to aim a bit higher and work a bit harder because of Uehara, I think that makes her a perfectly viable role model.

The trouble is (and what I think you're basically saying) is that the pickin's for role models in the mainstream media are pretty slim. In that context I thought she was a standout.

I don't think she was all that hot either, but I generally don't understand the standards of beauty in Japan.

She could deep throat a fire hydrant. That alone is a major beauty standard in Japan. It also opens the photographer's door, photogenic or not....

The report I read this morning said that she posted to her blog about being depressed about not being able to find love, then I guess she did herself in.

Sad news.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

What I don't understand about photoshoot idols in Japan is why they always pose with a worried look on their face that makes it appear as though somebody has just given them a kancho...

There is a kancho assasin out there, just waiting in the shadows for an idol to smile for the camera ;)

That and the puffed out cheeks pout drives me nuts. I also don't like the way acting like a total moron equals cute in Japan. As you know, SDH, I did have a connection the the gravure world. Most of the girls seemed a lot more intelligent and engaging in the real world than they did on their videos.

Was watching some stupid variety show this evening at 7:00pm, and I think she was a guest on the show, as every time the camera panned all the talents, one person was covered in a mosaic. My wife thought perhaps it was her, and the producers were too cheap to scrap the show, so they just tried to hide her.

Jesus, this is like the worst thing you can do to someone who just passed... pretend he/she never existed to begin with.

Maybe they noticed she was looking really depressed and wanted to avoid more criticism that they had obviously missed some warning signs.

They should have axed the show.
