I think because of traditional standards of beauty in the US and other Western countries which dominate the World's mass media that black women are generally not considered to be as beautiful in many places. If that's what he meant then, I don't think he was necessarily being racist. The article only quotes one partial sentence out of context and I'd like to know what the "..." in the quote was replacing.

The studies only deal in stats. What he meant to say was at this point in time whites and asians are 'perceived of' as being more attractive by a large number of people. Attractiveness is subjective and influenced by culture, the media etc... There is nothing scientific about such a study what so ever. It belongs in a women's magazine.
