The idea is to restart the intestinal flora from a foreign colony of bacteria. It's a bit yucky on paper but beside the middle ages snake oil school of medicine aspect it makes sort of sense. It's for sever case when restart of flora from the apendicit(*) can't be expected anymoar. (*, yeah they also finally discovered than this bit of pipe was in fact a safe storage for helpers bacteria)
Fecal bacteriotherapy
The procedure itself sometimes involves a 5- to 10-day treatment with enemas, made of bacterial flora from feces of a healthy donor, though most patients recover after just one treatment
Fecal bacteriotherapy is when feces from a close relative or spouse are given to patients suffering from intractable diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile. The purpose is to repopulate the intestines with the normal gut flora (intestinal bacteria) to decimate the clostridium. The healthy stool is administered by nasogastric tube, enema, or in a capsule.
