OH LOVELY: Residents Near Fukushima Are Pissing Radioactive Urine

Image

Newsflash: The radioactive crisis near Fukushima isn't getting any better.
This has been something we discussed in the last few weeks, but now there are some new disturbing details.
From Japan Times:
More than 3 millisieverts of radiation has been measured in the urine of 15 Fukushima residents of the village of Iitate and the town of Kawamata, confirming internal radiation exposure, it was learned Sunday.
Both are about 30 to 40 km from the Fukushima No. 1 power plant, which has been releasing radioactive material into the environment since the week of March 11, when the quake and tsunami caused core meltdowns.

Tsssss... don't worry, that's less than the radioactivity you'd be exposed to if you were to have a golden shower in a transatlantic flight...

(hope I got it right, I'm still waiting for my check from Tepco....)

I'm wondering if it's 3 millisieverts per person or collectively?

The source Adelstein is quoting is here:

Fukushima residents' urine now radioactive

According to the article they did two rounds of tests and found radioactive iodine in the earlier test only, but radioactive cesium in both the first and second tests.

To (sort of) answer Sirwanksalot's question:

Radioactive iodine was logged as high as 3.2 millisieverts in six people in the first survey, but none was found in the second survey.

So it looks as though that's the figure for individuals in that group of six.

The article does not give a figure for radiation from cesium. If it was just iodine that was high, then it was only temporary (radioactive iodine has a half-life of 8 days) and shouldn't be a problem. I'm actually a bit mystified as to why no radiation levels were quoted for cesium. I can only assume it was too small to be of importance.

I'm disgusted the Health Ministry has yet to pronounce on whether this urine is safe to drink.
