Typhoon!

Postby FG Lurker » Thu Jul 14, 2011 4:50 pm

Typhoon 1106 (JMA), aka Typhoon 08W (JTWC) is shaping up to be quite a monster storm.

It should weaken somewhat by the time it reaches us but at its peak out at sea sustained winds of ~250kph are forecast. Looks like it will hit somewhere along Japan's Pacific coast late on the 19th or early on the 20th.

Get ready for endless news video of people using umbrellas in 100kph+ winds, stories of idiots getting washed out to sea, and probably a few old men getting blown off their roofs...
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

I nevar remember, but isun't it like totally too early for the 2 or 3rd Typhoon of the year ?

Them 4 seasons are usually like this:
Freeze balls
Windy balls
Wet soaking balls
Roasted balls
Twisted wet balls
and I never remember if there is another windy season before the last:
Frozen balls (again)...

I had my roof blown off in Roppongi last night. Would it be too much to hope for twice in one week?

Definitely showing signs of being a Muttiah Muralidaran of typhoons at the moment, except it's blowin' instead of chuckin'.

Well it is windy today -not great weather if you happen to be a leaf, but not exactly the kind of weather that you need to close the schools for. But it may get worse.

It the moment I am extremely concerned about flying to Tokyo on Thursday as I have a connecting flight to Toronto on Thursday night. I just hope this damn storm gets over it's Shikoku Shindig and starts moving again.

Here it's on-off-on-off

Just now, no more wind or rain... 30 minutes ago on the road the visibility reduced to around 1 meter and I thought I was going to take off... Going shopping with mom in 20 minutes so with my usual luck I can expect some flooding in 10 to 15 minutes time...

They were predicting a category 4 when reaching Japan (climbing from 3) but it seems to be a 1 crawling toward the tropical storm status...
Either the sea is colder than expected or somebody didn't do his homework properly...

My bet is that the landfall might weaken it even more which would be like totally good for your flight plans...

Yeah... getting a real sonofabitch, nothing steady all in the randomness...
no rain -> no visibility because of the rain
no wind -> you can't even walk

Frequency around 2 minutes turnover... Not fun at all

A note courtesy of the good folks at the Canuck embassy.
Dear Canadian citizen,

As you may have heard on the news already, many regions of Japan are current under weather advisories for heavy rains, land slides, high waves and flash flooding due to the effects related to Tropical storm Ma-On (aka Typhoon #6).

Please take precautionary measures by avoiding low-lying areas, shorelines of rivers and coastal regions for the next 24 to 48 hours. Also, please be certain to follow any safety instructions issued by your local municipalities in the various regions of Japan.

For additional information please refer to the Japan Meteorological Agency website: http://www.jma.go.jp/en/typh/

As this tropical storm is receiving media coverage by international media outlets, you might consider contacting your family and friends back in Canada to assure them of your well-being.

Stay safe,

Consular Section
Embassy of Canada, Tokyo, Japan.
Geez guys, thanks for the heads up (from Kyushu where it's been cool with rain on and off since yesterday).
And, since I live about 3km from the coast, and next to a river (alright, a stream), I guess I'll be washed away. Oh well, better get my ark ready...

yeah, i got their notifcation, too. i might just start redirecting their emails to spam or /dev/null since by the time i get them shit has already long since hit the fan anyway.

on that note, this is one frickin slow-moving mofo which is probably why the canuck embassy actually had the time to put out the notification.

Been pretty blowy at times, certainly not enough to stop you leaving the house but you'd want to minimise the time outside. Bonus zone- no work! Gotta disagree with Dimwit, when severe weather warnings are out it's standard to keep the kids home from school.

Jesus, you get notices from the Canadian Embassy. I guess I'm on their ignore list.

It is really bizarre the difference 50km makes. Due south of us in Kochi they have have over 350mm of rain and very heavy wind. Here we have had 5mm of rain mostly in the form of a Niagara Falls style mist and a few gusts of wind.

have you actually registered yourself and (if applicable) your family with the embassy? i'll have to dig around for the link, i don't quite recall if i did it through the embassy's website or if there was a general registration through the the foreign affairs website but you can list everyone in your family (including non-citizens) and leave emergency contacts, too.

we just got some wind then drizzle here and a low pressure system that's been giving me grief and won't fuck off.

Canadian here who has never bothered to register. Not quite sure why, guess I just don't want to bother with keeping yet another gov't agency up to date with where I am.

Quite understandable. When you're on the run, you need to be careful about tracks.....Feel the same way myself.

I didn't bother registering until after 3/11 when the missus was getting paranoid and wanted to see what the embassies were telling expats to do.
Turns out it was mostly just "pay heed to the J officials and you'll be just dandy".

It stopped me...for about 10 mins...

I stepped outside this morning and almost immediately my cheapo vinyl conbini umbrella snapped in half and blew off down the street and onto the train tracks. Damn that wind is strong! Good thing I still had a big ass one from LA (that never got used n LA) stowed in my place.
