The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is looking at buying the Toshimaen amusement park in Nerima ward, currently owned and operated by the Seibu Group. Many of the "crazy Japan" photographs of crowded summer swimming pools on the web are shots of the park, which introduced some of the country's first wave pools and water chute attractions. Under the proposal, Tokyo would buy the 22 hectare site and remodel the park. Toshimaen is currently a designated evacuation centre for city in the event of an earthquake. Now, however, Tokyo wants to include the area as an official public space under the name Nerima Castle Site Park. The aim would be to create more open areas to raise its effectiveness as a refuge should disaster hit. The plan would seem to require cooperation from the Seibu Group but an official statement from the company says they have no plans to sell.
