Google ruins man's rep with auto-complete

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Mon Mar 26, 2012 6:33 pm

Japan court orders Google to halt auto-complete

A Japanese court has ordered search giant Google to suspend its auto-complete function because it breaches one man's privacy, his lawyer said.

Tokyo District Court approved a petition by the man, who claimed typing his name into the search engine generated a suggestion linking him to crimes he did not commit, lawyer Hiroyuki Tomita told media Sunday.

-snip-

The lawyer added that since these postings began appearing on the Internet over the last few years, his client has had difficulty finding work, with his online reputation always in question.

-snip-

The details of this case are not known, but it is possible that the plaintiff shares a name with someone who is legitimately associated with a crime.
Tomita said the auto-complete function was problematic because it guides users to sites that may contain false or misleading information.

Google has responded to the man's complaints by saying that since the results are compiled automatically there is no intrusion of privacy

Who the hell would want to work for a company that employs HR reps that use only Google?

Not saying, by the way, that Google's argument that because it happened automatically it's no problem, is not thatched bullshit.... We have a saying in engineering: everything that happens automatically also gets fucked up automatically. (It works better in Dutch)

How is it in Dutch?

"Alles wat automatisch gebeurt, wordt ook automatisch verneukt."

Or something like that? Don't know this one yet.

Reminds me of these fuzzy and neuro kitchen and laundry equipment that were sold in Japan in the 90's. No wonder they did not stay popular for long.

If he just happens to have the same name as a guy who was convicted of a crime, I find it hard to believe that it's really affecting his life that much. If he was one of the rare people in Japan who was actually arrested, had his named released in the press but was found not guilty, I could believe it would be an issue. I guess it could also be a problem if he has the name of a well-known serial killer or something like that.

Doesn't that translate as: When we all do automatically do a goat, automatically look for the goat's clit?

The autocomplete on google with my name is kinda dull. Just has

*Gomi Girl* Japan
*Gomi Girl* Tokyo

(note *Gomi Girl is not my real name just in case you were wondering. :-) )

My real name results yield wads of unrelated people. Dimwit Japan can be a good source of new avatars.

On page 4 or 5 of my results they have this weird link to this russian dating site with my name displayed prominently. I'm not sure why my name is there, or how it got there. I would like it removed.

Maybe this is their business model, the bastards.

typical answer from ehow on the topic of cleaning sticker glue residue:

remove the sticker
wipe glue residue with a towel.

thank youze fuckers... if it was working that way i would be googling it...

(real answer is... use WD40 as usual...)

Gotta love tangents. We went from Google to how to say goat clit in Dutch.

Anyway, the first two hits in Google for my name lead to news articles about a murderer. I'm suing.

Like previously mentioned - the employer is more of an issue than google.
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

I'm not even going near what happens when you do a search for my name...

Suffice to say, I have complete sympathy for the bloke who sued Google, though.
