Japan's only real natural resources are onsen and earthquakes...although they both come from the same place.

Not using all that tectonic activity for the clean power it provides is absolutely idiotic.

And it's not like an onsen resort needs that much actual 'onsen' for the bath... it has to be mixed with water so as to not boil the bathers alive.

I was going to say that I was aware that existing onsen bore owners have some say about other bores in a certain radius, but I wasn't aware that they were powerful enough to stop the power industry: more that the power industry chose until now cheaper or more convenient sources. Geothermal power plants exist in Tohoku......

but then I saw the source of the story: The "foreigners are locked in a dungeon and shaken down at gunpoint in an organised scam at Japanese airports: shocking if true" Economist.

Is this now, "it would be shocking, if it were true, that existing rights holders to a natural resource had a veto right, to an objectively measurable standard, over use of that resource by others?"

Geothermal would appear to be a good replacement for constant output base power generation, the job done until now by nuclear.

It's likely that TEPCO and their ilk have contributed to the misinformation campaign that somehow hotsprings will somehow cease to flow, and at the same time become polluted by tapping them to gererate electricity and to heat buildings.

Safer than nuclear, and more relaxing

As anyone who has been to Japan knows, there are strict rules about bathing in onsen, or hot springs blah blah boooooring

The fucking picture is misleading. I thought this was going to be like the J-Babe appreciation thread or something.

dimwit wrote:Geothermal is already producing a substantial percent of Kyushu's electric power. I am not sure about about other areas. I think there is the potential to produce alot more, but I am sceptical of the 50% they talk about, largely because of political considerations.

For example, the area around Lake Toba in Hokkaido is a place with exellent geothermal potential. The problem is not so much the cost of drilling, but the no one in the area wants to see the place ruined by electrical utility poles running amok, as it would destroy the toruism industry which is the backbone of the economy there.

I know you wouldn't know it by looking at Tokyo but they can actually bury power lines ;)

I don't give a shit what it costs to build, or what natural park gets disturbed, Japan better get to doing something or I am investing heavily in candle making companies!
