There's been a bit of a tussle at tepido.org about the actual content of the report. Apparently, the (original) Japanese versions saying this guy claimed his stuff was stolen while helping a foreign couple (as his back was turned or something the "bag" went missing, seems the most likely story someone would spin, never saw the "thief" so can't get caught up in the description).

The English version saying he claims the foreign couple stole it.

Of course debito et al. conclude, as with anything, that this proves Japan Is Racist. They think the original Japanese version, and ALL Japanese versions apparently, deliberately edited out the claim it was the foreign couple doing the stealing...because that's exactly what a xenophobic media out to imply all gaijin are criminals would do...

No, we didn't get it either.

Meanwhile the English version is likely just a sloppy translation (the irony if a white guy translator just assumed "Crime + Mention of gaijin by Japanese man = Gaijin Theives" type type type, click Save, collect paycheck blissfully ignorant of own racism).

debito fans find that is impossible, the English must be the only true version, based on original reporting of the Mainichi English website, not possibly a translation at all, and shows that Japan Is Racist because the insurance company and police believed his story (until they didn't anymore) because they're racist (until they weren't). debitoes are are not clear on whether the writer of the English report is racist or not. But then, they're not clear on a lot of things.

Woman found murdered in Yokohama apartment believed to be Russian

YOKOHAMA -- A woman found dead with slash and stab wounds at an apartment here early on April 20 is believed to be a 19-year-old Russian national, investigators said.

Kanagawa Prefectural Police received an emergency call in the early hours of April 20, and officers arriving at an apartment in Naka Ward, Yokohama, found a dead woman bleeding from her body and covered with a jacket. Noting that there are a number of slash and stab wounds on her body, investigators said they suspect that she had been murdered.

Local police believe the woman is a 19-year-old Russian national from her alien registration certificate, and are trying to confirm her identity.

A 36-year-old Japanese man, who claims to be an acquaintance of the victim, said he visited the room with a foreign man and then alerted prefectural police after seeing her slash her own hand.

However, as his statements contradict the actual conditions of the victim's body, investigators are cautiously investigating the case.

A 37-year-old woman who lives downstairs in the same apartment complex said she heard a man and a woman scream.

"I heard a man talk loudly and a woman cry. I also heard the huge sound of something falling to the floor," she said.
