Scam Alert! Fake Monk Fundraising

Postby Russell » Sun Nov 11, 2012 1:22 pm

Conning foreign tourists to fund temples watches

Tourists beware! The media is now reporting about a really terrible scam that is going on in Tokyo’s major tourist areas. It seems that there is a group of fake Buddhist monks who trick foreign tourists into donating money to their “temple.” Here is a TV report that aired on Oct 23:

The “monks” approach tourists, hand them a golden good luck charm, and ask for a donation. Many tourists are happy to donate to such a noble cause. The fundraisers seem to target foreign tourists, but they also occasionally approach Japanese people. In a short time, the men can raise many thousands of yen.

But are they really monks? One told a Japanese reporter that he was raising money for a temple in Bhutan. Another claimed to be raising money for a temple in Taiwan. Yet the two men seemed to be working together.

A call to a Bhutanese association in Japan revealed that their clothing is totally different from what Buddhist monks wear back in Bhutan. And the Taiwanese temple that was written on one man’s fundraising appeal stated that they had not sent any monks to Japan to raise money. The “monks” were lying.

The camera crew observed the “monks” taking breaks from fundraising. These breaks included trips to clothing stores and luxury watch shops. How could a monk afford a designer wristwatch?

After one failed attempt to follow a “monk” home, the news crew located their apartment. The “monks” were living in a residence full of Chinese people. They spot a man who they had seen fundraising in Akihabara the day before. Instead of monk robes, he was wearing normal clothing. Although he initially denied that he could understand Chinese, he eventually began to answer their questions in Chinese. He claimed to be a cook, and feigned ignorance of the fundraising scam. (Although his face is blurred for legal reasons, he is the exact same person that they filmed in Akihabara.)

At the end of the report, it is noted that the scammers seem to have been scared out of the Akihabara area. But they are are still scamming people. They have moved to other tourist areas, such as Harajuku, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Asakusa, Shinagawa, and Roppongi.

Hopefully, this news report will get the cops to crack down on these scumbags.

I used to laugh at same type of scam by the Hari Krishna wearing weirdo robes at LAX airport in the US who used to try to "give" me their books and then ask for a donation. I just took their book, didn't give them anything, walked through the secure side of the boarding area. Then, I threw their book in the trash while still in plain view of the Hari Krishna freakaziod.

Hmm. Sounds like fun!

I will put some chocolate coins in my pockets to pay the "monk" with in case he gives me his "golden" certificate.

I see these guys around town all the time. The first time I encountered one of them the guy came up to me and my friend while we were sitting in a park and handed me one of those good luck charms and kept saying "peace" and "Buddha" with a big friendly smile on his face. Then he tried to make me write my name on a list he was carrying. I knew he'd be asking for money next so I handed the charm back and said I wasn't interested. His demeanor completely changed, he got a really nasty look on his face, and he became really aggressive and started pushing the list at me and repeating "My (sic) name". I was very close to knocking him on his ass when he backed off but he continued to flash us dirty looks while he was trying to scam other people.

Yup... the one in charge of family matters (who is quite awesome (even by hardcoremunist atheist standard) is a former bosozoku and now ride a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Mk IX (his bald head vovered with a bandana). Never miss an occasion to friendlyly smoke me at the red light...

A friend buys all his vehicles used from a monk who once sponsored his early cultural visas, thus allowing said friend to build his katei-kyoshi fiefdom. The list so far includes a Land Cruiser Prado, a Mazda Miyata, an Alfa Romeo, and a Range Rover.

The worst are those deaf (or so they claim) beggars that put shit on your table at the airports and such...some sort of BS message of donations and shit. Then they come back a minute later expecting donations. The lemur I was with last year when we got hit up by them, used a tissue to knock the shit off our table and got the worst stink eye from the beggar I've ever seen to this day haha.

SOP for all religions, except these poor punters are going to get in trouble over their ill-gotten gains instead of using it to fund games of ping the tail of the altar boy...

I'm definitely up for starting a religion. I bags being the guru who gets to fuck all the pretty young wives. Don't think the wild hair look is gonna be possible now, so I'll have to shave me head, put on the serene look and enlighten lasses with the seediness of the Lord. All tax-free, of course.

I used to work near a Shinto shrine, and sometimes ate my lunch on the grounds in warm weather.
The resident Shinto priest (not a monk) seemed to be doing fairly well as he had a Benz sedan, and a Merikun camper van something like the one below.

See! See what happens when you're pious and in touch with god(s)?

If people start walking around after me and calling me "Messiah," I'll make sure you can have tax-free camper vans, Benzes and nubile young lasses -- AS WELL AS BEING RICH!!! (Only the inner circle people, though...)

I did a 6mo homestay at a small temple in Aichi back in 2001....to his credit, the priest worked his ass off and was awesome in so many ways....BUT the family was ballin' out of control. The only way you'd know it was the family cars hidden behind the temple. Benz, Peugeot, and a Hi Ace for cruising in through Toyota

Well, it's a team thing....I'll dress up in the rags, walk around like I'm stoned and attuned with all that shite that makes people peaceful and people can walk around me, hurling flowers and chanting messiah. I'll smile, pretend to bless someone and will baffle others. Then, one day, we pretend to create some miracle, promise that to all believers and, next thing you know, we're a multi-trillion yen operation that does not have to pay tax.
Money is like an aphrodisiac for women.....

See, we can't go wrong....(if all else fails, though, there's always a right hand)

So, to sum up this thread up to now:

- Fake monks collect money for non-existing temples and buy watches from it

- Real monks collect money for their temples and buy cars from it

- Women love monks. Well, some women...

I dunno though, guy was available 24/7 and helped people emotionally with all kinds of problems. In a cuntry that lacks adequate care (or even recognition of) mental abuse/diseases/etc. I think he probably earns what he makes and his service is needed. (it was awesome to see him deal with emotionally fucked people in a religious setting without "Jesus this" and "god that" :cry2: just solid advice) They made bank for sure...but was definitely far from an easy life. Can't say I would say the same for western priests though I'm sure some do exist.

There are, indeed, some excellent people in religious situations and they do outstanding jobs....

....I'm looking to be more of a typical religious type, though: the cunt who preys on the gullible and drains everything out of them. Hallelujah! :biggrin2:
