Kinokuniya foreign language book sale

Postby yanpa » Wed Dec 26, 2012 1:23 pm

For afficionados of carbon-based data storage and transmission devices, Kinokuniya is holding a 20% off sale of foreign-language books between Jan 1st and Jan 3rd at some stores; see here for details.

Oh, so that means they're only 380% overpriced then?

On the three days people are least likely to go shopping.

Is 20% worth making a special trek into Shinjuku for?

*Kinokuniya*, not Tower Records  (or Kinokuniya the supermarket   )

The paperbacks I've bought at Kinokuniya are within a couple of dozen yen of the amazon.co.jp price, tragically I lack any kind of advanced mathematical qualifications but last time I checked, 20% off is 20% off. Granted, it's only interesting if they happen to have something in stock you want (not exactly a stellar selection) and you happen to be passing by, but I thought I'd mention it in case anyone's interested.

Non-fiction is overpriced though.

Paying not to go to Nagoya... yeah I can understand that

Seriously it might be cheaper in some cases to order foreign books from amazon.co.jp, the unit price might be a bit higher but shipping is free and usually quicker (they must have some stock over here, I've had orders arrive in less than 48 hours on more than one occasion).

I tell you guys...the S.M. Stirling series, Domination of the Draka....best dystopia/apocaliterature you will ever read (especially if you're titillated by G-on-G action, including the occasionally involuntary...)

I'm ploughing through his "Change" series at the moment. A bit long-winded in parts but generally enjoyable, especially the part where the town where my employer is based in real life is thoroughly trashed. Some G-on-G roles (also B-on-B), but I'd go elsewhere for titillation.

"The Peshawar Lancers" (self-contained novel) is also a good read.

To me the biggest abomination are the magazine sales. Did I hallucinate Tower records and similar ilk having $5-$6 USD magazines for roughly 1000 to 1200 yen back when yen was 110/$1? This would have been circa 2000. After re-expatriating to this cuntry in 2007, I took a trip back to the US for work and almost shat myself at the book store. This was about 120/$1, but magazines were on average 2200 yen (and still 1 month behind). Then then yen went to 75/$1.... and the magazines are still fucking 2200 yen.

I dunno...imagine coming up against a homo sapiens drakensis genetically modified to be able to release pheromones at will and needing to do so with almost insatiable regularity.

S.M. Stirling is not really someone I'd read (I gave up on reading novels when nobody wanted to publish mine <probably with due cause, in all honesty, tough I still think a tale centering on cunnicide couldn't possibly be anything but a thriller>) but loved the Domination of the Draka series. It's out of print, but you may be able to get it on Kindle. Mind you, I admit to possibly being, er, colored, about this series as I had/have studied apartheid, a system targeted by the books that aimed to be a chilling example of what could happen had that code of laws persisted and became harsher (The series was completed while <white-run, as opposed to the current ANC-controlled> South African apartheid was still in operation).

Agree with you 1,000% (or, about the same as the markup).

I hope all these bastards go broke ASAP.

I'll never forget my early days here when I had to sell my soul to get a copy of MAD. I tell you what...Yes, me worry.

I think I bought a magazine there once. In my defence, the internet did not really exist at the time and I was very very bored. In retrospect maybe I should have spent the money on chuhai.

Of course...I'm incredibly fucking egocentric.

I haven't, of course, thought of the possibility that what I wrote is sheer and utter crap that very few people have even the remotest of interest in reading. But I think that's probably the reality. :-D
