(Tokyo) A transgendered woman announced Tuesday she is running for a local council seat in Tokyo. Aya Kamikawa, 35, presented her candidacy documents to an election administration committee.
It is the first time a transgendered has run for public office in Japan.
Kamikawa left empty blank on the application for gender. Under Japanese law, birth records showing she was born male, cannot be altered. She is on a hospital waiting list to undergo sex reassignment surgery later this year.
