Transgendered Woman Runs For Office
365Gay.com Newscenter / March 25, 2003 10:45 a.m. ET/+5GMT/-3PT
(Tokyo) A transgendered woman announced Tuesday she is running for a local council seat in Tokyo. Aya Kamikawa, 35, presented her candidacy documents to an election administration committee.
It is the first time a transgendered has run for public office in Japan.
Kamikawa left empty blank on the application for gender. Under Japanese law, birth records showing she was born male, cannot be altered. She is on a hospital waiting list to undergo sex reassignment surgery later this year.

you go girl!!

Kamikawa said she decided to run in the election hoping to raise public awareness about patients with the disorder and transsexuals, including the inconveniences and humiliation they face in their daily lives caused by documents that reveal the gender they were born with.

A worthy cause..

Does she have other policies as well?

I guess it's more than single-issue important in Setagaya according to the...
The Japan Times: March 26, 2003

"Nothing will change if I remain silent," she said. , adding she wants to make Setagaya a psychologically barrier-free community.

Her platform will include calling for a review of unnecessary indications of gender in official documents and bringing attention to discrimination and prejudice against minorities across the country.

"I will be glad if this can be an opportunity to get the public to contemplate these issues," Kamikawa said.

I think this will stir some healthy debate and that is always a good thing. The advantage of her running in Japan is that there are a few very popular transgender TV talents..

The WINNER is...

PlanetOut, NY - Monday, April 28, 2003 / 05:23 PM
The first transgender woman to seek election in Japan has won a municipal seat in Tokyo. That Aya Kamikawa even was allowed to run as a woman was seen as a major victory for the country's transgender community.
