GP Forums Closing. How welcome are GP-fugees?

Postby kurogane » Thu Oct 10, 2013 4:02 pm

It's offical, the GP Forums are closing.

How does everybody feel about discreet introductions of this site to a few good FGs from GP?

Since opinions on what makes for Good vary widely, I'll list a few examples: Ume, Esoteric, Brown Cow, Cucashopboy, that sort of middle range mellow groover.

I thought it would be proper to ask first........................

I used to post in the GP forums when the whole Richard Cayne thing happend... Brown Cow is really helpful in quite a few forums.

I just dont want no jackasses like McBlowJob over here or any super PC assholes...

I am sure there aint no problem, we might have a talk amongst us premium folk.

I'm not in charge of anything here more than being a laissez-faire moderator. The FG Forum has always been open to new members and you can invite "personally" anybody you want (and mods can un-invite the poopyheads).
That said, I would hate if the GaijinPot's nastiness spilled over to here.

Question:
What really is the real cause of GaijinPot Forums demise?
........... :?: Legal liability for comments
........... :?: Poor return on the time and money invested
........... :?: Nastiness
........... :?: IT incompetence (the claimed cause)
........... :?: The rise of fucko-Facebook and social media
........... :?: "Policy"--The owner, GPlus, also shut down
............... the Japan Today forums a few months ago.

PS:
I send clueless newbies, wannabes, and Wapanese over to http://www.reddit.com/r/japan/ when then say they want, "to live the dream." The folks on reddit-hapan never seem to tire of answering how-do-I-get-a-job-in-Japan-without-a-degree and square watermelon questions.

The GaijinPot Forum Is Closing
forum.gaijinpot.com/forum/community-center/general-discussion/1527872-forum-closing
As many of you are aware the GaijinPot forum has been struggling to recover from the unauthorized access which occurred a few weeks ago. The upgrade to vBulletin 5 has been plagued with problems and requires far more commitment to getting it right than we are able to commit at this time.
It's hard to believe but GaijinPot was started 15 years ago by a couple of English teachers from a small apartment in Nagoya. Since that time we have helped thousands of foreigners come live and work in Japan.
The company has grown from a small two man crew to the large international team that we have today. Our products have evolved over the years as we are constantly looking for the best ways to connect with our users.
In that light we have decided to shut the GaijinPot forums down. While the forum served a purpose in the early days, with the rise of social media we feel that there are better options for us to connect with our users.
We would like to thank all our readers for contributing to the GaijinPot Forum and hope that you will join us on our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter.
We will leave the forums open until October 15 for the users to clear out any unread messages you may need.

My vote goes for #2, 4, and 5 with a healthy dash of #1. My last banning was so random it had to be a lasting grudge paid when The Word went out. Kinda funny.

Great. Can we expect more excellent posts like this one?

Probably with no more frequency than we can expect posts glorifying Constitutional Priniciples over actual acheived legal results that shelter innocent school children from hateful bigotry they never deserved. Allowing that we almost agree on the desirability of Hate Speech laws.

But I did tip a few Sacred Cows there, so my bad, and my apologies.

The GP who don't belong here will sort themselves out automatically.

If not, Coligny will sort them out for us...

So I say, yes, they are welcome.

That must have been the fuse that lit the bomb, even though I was right, but for some vague reason I remember there being unterwebz murmurs of an impending forum closure, and then I heard it that banning was by a Mod that had it out for me. My Peeples are working on it ;)

BTW, were you kidding about Brown Cow? I quite like him, as you know. Anyhoo...........

Russell,

Thanks. Nice points. Sort of like any forum, really.

Also, great idea by Taro Topo to direct the I Must Make Immigrant to Japan newby types to reddit. That place makes Japan Today look like a Mensa meeting. I think that was a big factor in the final demise of GP: the money producing element had changed so much that the forum regulars were like a fire hose on a weak, sputtering match flame. The kids really are stupid as bricks, and actually expect to be told they're geniuses for knowing that anime is Japanese.

I won't miss that part, and I had definitely passed my best by date by that last banning, but it is a shame to see that level of pandering. Still, good fun had by most. RIP.

My time budget for looking after FG is extremely limited, a sudden en-masse influx of Gpottyness is not something I would look forward to, though individual members of good breeding are of course welcome.

Gotcha. Tanks, Yanps.

I had planned to restrict the guest list, and will put out the word that this isn't your grandmother's GP, but a whole new brand of tentacle.

Nope, unless that is another alias used by the same guy.

Wasn't McTojo the poster formerly known on GP and elsewhere as McAlpine? He was an American guy with a serious Japaneez Otaku syndrome (Sooshee, Sakeee, and Yoookada), comically bad literacy skills, and negligible intelligence, though he did have an occasionally enjoyable joie de vivre. A sort of malignant buffoon, if you will.

I could be mixing posters up here, though, given my total lack of trolldar.

PS That Chris Johnson Goyamagazine site looks so weird it's creepy; he makes Debito look as humble as Kwai Chang Caine. He is the doofus wanna be journalist that got bunged for no visa and then went spazz about it online, isn't he?

There should be quite a little kerfuffle there if a bunch of old GPers join it though. That guy got reamed royally when that visa story broke.

I just hope he will mesh with the rest of the crowd. He has good points, but on FG you have to be able to take shit from everyone, no matter how serious the topic is.
