Four backpacks stuffed with cocaine worth 4.8 billion yen ($48 million) were found on a beach in Japan, the biggest amount ever discovered in the country, local media reported.

The backpacks, containing 80 kilograms (176 pounds) of the drug wrapped in waterproof tape, were found by local residents in Yokosuka city on Nov. 19, the Asahi newspaper reported, citing local police. The find is the biggest by value in Japan, public broadcaster NHK said.

Yokosuka, home to a U.S. Navy base, is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Tokyo.

The backpacks will be held at the local koban until the owner claims them. If nobody comes forth within 90 days, said a police spokesman, the sale proceeds will be handed over to local resident Makiko Mihara, 57, who turned in the backpacks.

Apparently there were empty plastic bottles, probably used as floats, and a fluorescent-painted marker as well. The police assume it was a drug handover that went awry.

I never believe the dollar value they quote by the police anymore.

You are correct. Based on US prices 80 kilo would be around 1.5 to 2 million dollars depending on area of the country, possibly less. I imagine buying in bulk (80 kilo is like costco packaging) would drastically reduce the price. The $48 million is probably the value at tokyo street price by gram.

That's the value of if it's sold in the smallest value on the street (grams) once, and probably combined w/ the whole price 1 level up from that.
