Ministry takes issue with stereotyped illustrations
IHT/Asahi: April 10,2003
...Howard French, Tokyo bureau chief of The New York Times and himself African-American, labeled the revisions ``ridiculous.''
French acknowledged he might be more sensitive to the issue than others, but said he had ``no problem'' with such illustrations.
More importantly, he said he was opposed to textbook restrictions extending to such details even though the ministry request was aimed at eliminating discrimination.

As far as big noses go. Most gaijin have larger noses. But they DO take it over the top.
