Radioactive FOOKushima Monkeys!

Fukushima monkeys show possible effects of radiation, study suggests
The Japan Times | July 25, 2014
Monkeys near the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant have lower blood cell counts than cousins living farther away, possibly because of radiation exposure, a study said Thursday.
A Japanese research team wrote in the journal Nature Scientific Reports that although they could not prove the link, the blood levels 'might likely be the result of exposure to some form of radioactive material'.
Fewer blood cells could make the monkeys more prone to disease, they said, and 'may suggest that the immune system has been compromised to some extent'.
The team had compared white and red blood cell levels in macaques living in a forest area of the city of Fukushima, 70 km (43 miles) from the nuclear plant, with that of 31 monkeys living 400 km away in the Shimokita Peninsula.

Why have the Shimokita troop as the control? I would like to see results from other troops, since the Shimkita troop are most famous for being the most northerly troop of primates other than man. It could be argued that as they are in an extreme environment they have a higher count than normal, and for the sake of science I think comparisons with more troops is necessary. Sample size in Fukushima is not reported in the article either.

Edited to add: thanks to CJ's twitter (I know, I should learn not to look) I see that the Grauniad article tells us that there were 61 monkeys in the Fukushima cohort. It also mentions caesium, which Japan Times failed to do.

Not so fast blaming Tepco and Fukushima here Taro !

Those monkeys could also totally be treated by chemo or radiation therapy and didn't tell anyone to create a panic !

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-cond ... t-20046192

Further proof that this is a hoax being that despite also being a totally safe incident, ABSOLUTELY NO MONKEYS where found around Chernobyl, with low blood cell count.

Am I being a good contrarian ? Getting hard to top the regular fauna...

It's a dirty job, but someone else has to do it - how else will we know of his latest shenanigans?

But seriously, thanks for the additional article link, no matter where it came from.

Prof Geraldine Thomas, at Imperial College London, said the Chernobyl studies were not “not regarded as scientifically validated” and that the correlations between the caesium and low blood counts in the Fukushima study were not statistically strong.

“Unfortunately this is yet another paper with insufficient power to distinguish real effects and relevance to human health,” she said. “We know that one of the most damaging health effects comes from fear of radiation, not radiation itself.” She also noted that people, unlike the monkeys, could avoid eating contaminated food from the Fukushima region.

Except in cuntries like Japan, China, the Koreas, etc.

Personally I'm more worried about contaminated food from China, Korea, Vietnam etc.

BTW how're the nuggets recently, Coligny?

I mean, I'm not tinfoil hat enough to be checking what I eat with a Geiger counter but I sure as hell don't have any faith in the "safety precautions" in place.

That's Sophism 101: Put a white coat and say 'we know (...)'
Pretty sure those guys in MH17 were almost definitely killed by the actual plane crash rather than their fear of flying.

Well...stress/fear can honestly fuck people up but if you're not physically being fucked by the radiation and "suffering" from "fear of radiation" then all I can say is "life is hard...don't make it harder.

It is mainly to periodically verify how many kilometres there are between where he is and where I am. OMG does that make me a stalker??
If there is any entertainment contained therein, I will advise.
