No smoking please, we're Japanese

Postby yanpa » Tue Aug 19, 2014 8:07 am

Following on from the Mickey D smoking ban reported in this thread

The Japan Times wrote:Taking cue from McDonald’s, Masuzoe eyes smoking ban for all Tokyo restaurants

Tokyo Gov. Yoichi Masuzoe suggested Sunday that the metropolitan government will consider putting a smoking ban in all restaurants in the capital before it hosts the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“Japan is the only advanced nation where smoking is permitted at restaurants. We’d like to pass an ordinance (for a smoking ban) with the cooperation of the metropolitan assembly,” Masuzoe said on a television program.

Masuzoe’s remark follows Friday’s announcement by McDonald’s Japan that it had banned smoking at all of its 3,135 outlets across the nation. ...more...

As in most things, Japan is about a decade, if not more, behind other countries.

This will be a big improvement in QoL.

Do you know how many bars have asked me not to smoke cigars here while being full of cheap 1mg cigarette smoke? If I can't enjoy a real smoke why do I have to deal with the stench of cheap japanese cigarettes?

Because the owners of those establishments don't want you to smoke a cigars in their places. I don't smoke (other than the occasional cigar) so I have no problem with owners making their establishment no smoking. However, I don't want the government to force it on them like they have in so many other countries. Also, with all the small mom and pop bars in Tokyo that don't employ anyone outside of the family, it'll be hard to argue that it's an employee health issue in a lot of places.

Well, of course, there is the health issue of customers.

And it is fucking annoying, this stench. It spoils my meal.

By lack of any legislation on smoking in restaurants, I support any measure against smoking, since it tends to reduce smoking rates. That in itself reduces the probability that I encounter a smoker in a restaurant.

That's not much of an argument because people don't have to patronize your business if they don't like the fact you allow smoking. The argument for employee health at least has some validity. The biggest problem in Japan is that on top of allowing smoking, most places have terrible air circulation because of shitty building design.

Just last week one of my colleagues was complaining about all the drunk people on the beach in Kanagawa and how it spoiled his fun and wasn't good for his family to be exposed to. He was saying that it was also a safety issue since people get drunker and more dehydrated in the sun and are more likely to drive to the beach than to a bar or restaurant. He said that drinking on beaches should be banned in Japan. How many of you would agree with that?

It does have validity.

Certain types food is only served by restaurants that allow smoking, which basically excludes all people who can't stand smoke.

Now consider this: only 20% of people smoke, why do they have the right to spoil the atmosphere of the remaining 80%?

So, a smoking ban in all restaurants in the whole country is long overdue.

If that will be the legacy of the Tokyo Olympics, there is at least one positive thing to say about it.

When I go to a restaurant, I'm going there to eat some tasty food, not get fumigated by some selfish asshole who lights up. I don't want my hair/clothes to smell like shitty cigarettes when I get out of there either. (SJ's comment on the shit design and ventilation here is spot on) I'm all for banning smoking in restaurants ALL OVER JAPAN.

Western type bars are a different animal though...people don't exactly go to a bar for the food.

So is this dude the total opposite of Blinky? He actually sounds reasonable....for a politician.

Why not ban drinking in public? It would certainly cut down on fights, drunk driving, and alcohol consumption. It would also make places smell better and make it less likely that children are exposed to drunken foolishness.

Alcohol is not banned because it is an accepted drug.

Its effects on society are far worse than marijuana, but marijuana is not accepted so it is banned.

And you should differentiate between using alcohol and abusing alcohol. The former is fine with me, the latter not.

Tobacco on the other hand is not fine with me, whether it is used or abused, because both affect me negatively.

In both cases I am talking of course about users of their preferred drug who are in my direct neighborhood.

Restaurants should all be forced to be vegan, halal, and kosher and all allergens and processed foods should be banned. Also, I know a lady with a perfume allergy (true story) that is set off if she's in a small space like and elevator with someone wearing a lot of it, so wearing perfume in public should also be banned. While we're at it we should make everyone where helmets, goggles, padding, and air filtration mask while they're in public. I shouldn't forget to ban offensive language either.

WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!???

In Vietnam durian fruits are forbidden in public transport because they stink as hell.
Tobacco and cigars stink as hell too, why should they be allowed in places where you need to be able to also smell what you eat ?

Perfume, you like or don't like, if you don't like and is a bit short on the whole,IQ thing you claim it stinks instead... But perfumes are not diesel exhausts... And don't come with health risks for third parties...

You remember the whole freedom of some stop were freedom of others start ? It's because of asshole like you that we end up with laws for everything... Unless they get the boot of the law kicking them in the face they don't get that their freedom to be a nuisance is instead plain abuse...

The part where you put a minor issue affecting more or less 2-4% of the population against a real nuisance and much larger health threat.

In other words... You are throwing shit at the wall hoping something will stick.

No legitimate study shows a health threat to customers from occasional exposure to second-hand smoke in bars.
