Japan Inc. Wants You!

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Mon Feb 23, 2015 11:35 am

Look no further: Japan Inc. wants you

Corporate Japan is reaching beyond its shores to attract new talent, offering lucrative training programs to recruit employees as far away as the U.S. and Europe.

Bolstered by favorable immigration policies as part of a new growth strategy by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, companies including banking majors like Mitsubishi UFJ and consumer electronics giant Toshiba have become heavy participants in a flurry of job fairs that have sprung up globally in recent months.

Carrots dangled included an opportunity to work overseas in Japan and detailed on-the-job training. But what has proven most attractive is the lack of requirement for specific skills. Unlike other countries, most Japanese firms put their new hires into general job roles before relegating them to specific departments after a training period.

Japan Inc. wants young foreigners (new college grads! work experience disqualifies you) to pay them shit wages so they'll quit for foreign companies a few years later that give them responsibilities and decent money. Then they'll complain about foreigners quitting.

The HR systems in Japan are going to blow up a ton of companies because HR are fucking idiots. I actually wound up doing research on nursing and good hospital HR practices overseas are basically not done here at all.

I'm not sure if it'll work out. As descendants of hunters I don't know if Westerners will ever fit in to Japanese agricultural society.

But oversight can mean overseeing or overlooking. But then why do oversee and overlook have different meanings? Fuuuuuuck ....

No wonder J-peeps and other non English speakers have such a hard time getting their heads around this weird lingo

At the port of Calais, there seem to be lots of people waiting for a hop to the UK. Not that I'd understand, how life in the UK is better than in France, but we could invite them all to Japan, if the Brits don't want them.

Because see and look have fundamentally different meanings. At root see refers to the physical act of visual perception using the ocular organ - sort of like hear. Look, at root refers to the act of directing ones visual capability towards something - sort of like listen. Watch, at root, refers to the deliberate application on ones visual capability to something for a period of time. Listen covers both direct ears towards and apply ears to something for a period of time.

Of course, see (and less commonly hear) can also refer to the watching (or listening to) of a complete act or performance. eg Did you see the game last night? Did you hear the President's State of the Union address.

Overlook then fits (sort of) with to direct ones sight over the top of something. Oversee fits (sort of) with to watch over (here over has the meaning of something like the meaning in rule over) an entire performance of something.

Hope that helps

I can never quite figure this out either. Why not crack on with making a success of being in France instead of annoying everyone by saying all you want to do is get out. And if they think the UK is the promised land they can think again.

I hear you. Those verbs all have a number of alternate meanings. English is a very flexible language at times. In one way its good because you don't have to learn so many words - In another way it's difficult because you have to learn a lot of alternate meanings for one fairly simple verb.

Yeah, I binged it after I saw your post.

So an overwatching unit provides oversight for advancing friendly units. :spin:

Not really. Oversight is the noun from oversee meaning more to boss around. Assuming it doesn't mean accidental omission of course.

One of the meanings of watch is a military term meaning take responsibility/guard and I think that may be closer. As in, Not on my watch! In the word overwatching, the over bit doesn't refer to seniority but to physical position.

Yep, that's exactly what is going to happen and the J-companies deserve the consequences (hell, they want the "consequences" since they want the gaijin gone before they reach katcho/課長 level)).

From my 25 years in Hitachi I can guarantee the following:
*************Recent US university grads in useless majors (History, English, etc.) are hired only (since CS majors can find real jobs in the Real World).
*************Most of these gai-shinjin are shunted off into editing and education positions---never to be heard from again.
*************A handful of new-grad gaijin get "real" jobs/training in engineering and software, but that training is so limited that it cannot carry over to a
*************real company in the Real World.
*************The creation of a new generation of even more Fucked Gaijin to join our Forum!

Not surprising...this is a country where they treat employment like university "level up," complete with annual entrance ceremonies, dormitories, and the mindset that if you don't get in at the designated hiring period, you'll have to wait and try again next year

My insider in the recruitment rumour mill has also suggested they are looking to headhunt older types with relevant experience and especially Jpn skills (language and sociocultural). I don't think I could do it, and I highly doubt they would pay me enough to have a change of heart, but it's an interesting development for ex-Japan hands that have realised how shitty moving home can be. Has anybody else heard this sort of thing?

I would prefer to just apply for PR straight out and pretend to run a shifty sole proprietorship while looking for something even I might want to do.

I haven't heard of that but I work in the IT industry where old guys are probably even less respected than in other industries. I have seen more older Japanese guys being able to move from one top-tier Japanese firm to another. Some companies are still pretty stubborn though. I know one major Japanese IT service provider that won't hire any mid-career professionals over 35. No joke, if you turned 36 yesterday they will reject your application.

I simply adore the youth fetish in the tech industries. It's like betting on a 3 legged puppy to win the Preakness, occasional boy genii aside. Translation work seems to suffer a similar streak, though that's usually the younger translators themselves. Good cheap laughs either way, but I get the frustration of anybody that needs to deal with that BS.

It's beyond my comprehension...I thought this was a cuntry that valued experience and such. It's not like they can't take a lil more time and weed out the out of touch jiji's and baba's from potential candidates. I know plenty of 40-60...hell even a few 70+ yo dudes that are more tech savy than the average youth...and they got mad work/life experience.....not to mention connections. (and are less likely to take off time to get married, have a baby, etc.)

I heard it's the same in South Korea for older workers. It's the double-edged sword of Confucianism. With age comes respect which means we couldn't possibly disrespect you by having you report to someone younger than you or only pay you X. To be fair to the ageists a lot of old farts do live up to all the ganko oyaji stereotypes and despite what they claim don't do well taking orders from younger managers.

I guess the issue is the mentality of extrapolating their stereotypes of the local older workers on older FG workers? (Rotten) apples to ripe oranges?

I was more concerned that he was suggesting that Japanese are unique and different, due to the number of seasons or length of intestine or whether their great great great great great great great great great grandfather used a bow and arrow or a hoe...

In my experience, the average 50 year old Japanese office dude has the same management skill as a 28 year old American or Brit.

In my experience, quite a few Japanese lack communication skills for management, especially when FGs are among the managed. I am not talking about language skills, but social skills.
