Postby Taro Toporific » Sun Jun 14, 2015 5:42 pm

Carrying all her food on her, Sonya Baumstein was rescued off the Japanese coast on Saturday after sending out a distress signal...

Odyssey ends: U.S. woman attempting to row solo across the Pacific rescued after one week.
ImageThe Associated Press | June 14, 2015 (@AP) --- A U.S. woman attempting to cross the Pacific by rowboat has ended her solo attempt because of expected bad weather.
Sonya Baumstein was rescued off the Japanese coast on Saturday after sending out a distress signal, Kyodo news agency reported on Sunday.
The 30-year-old Baumstein departed from Choshi, Japan, one week ago, hoping to become the first woman to row solo across the Pacific.

Sharks, in general, don't eat humans, since they do not contain enough blubber.

In her case, however, they would have a feast, but they would need to check their cholesterol levels afterwards...

Funny why she quit.

Because of expected bad weather.

Read that again. She did not quit because of bad weather, but because of expected bad weather. I just checked the weather sites, but no typhoon is forecast for the coming week or so.

She probably quit because her ill-trained muscles could not propel her at sufficient speed against the breeze.

I do wonder how this Barbamama got enough funding for her attempt.

Her boat was fully loaded with those, but she ran out in less than 2 days...

LOL

This blog also has a Training & Diet page.

Which is blank...

But then there is an About Sonya page, which tells us:

Dream Expedition Food? Bacon chocolate pretzels

:keyboardcoffee:

It gets even better.

Potential challenges of this crossing other than distance and duration include high seas over 40 feet, winds above 50 knots, extreme wildlife, and freighters or other large vessels. Already she narrowly avoided a large fishing boat, using flares to alert them of her location.

Must've been one of those whaling vessels homing in on her...

Yep, and it seems she lives in her own fantasy world.

According to her web page, she already rowed the Atlantic in 2011.

However, there is no mentioning of this "accomplishment" on Wikipedia or anywhere else on the web.

She also claims to have crossed the Bering Strait on a stand-up paddle board.

That took her some 11 hours for the 51 miles at the narrowest point of the Bering Strait. Taking into account breaks for eating and drinking, that would average to more than 5 miles an hour. That is quite a brisk pace. For 1 hour or so it can be maintained by a well-trained male, but for someone in her shape for 10 hours? And then the video seems to claim that it is only 28 miles. WTF?

I had to read that 3 times to figure it out. At first I thought it was a typo (for UNexpected), then I couldn't figure it out at all, then I realised it meant an unfavourable weather forecast that didn't meet her dreams of sun and calm. So not only is she delusional, but a complete nancy too.

Kudos for grabbing the whaling boat joke, btw. I wanted that one. Really I did

Has anybody else figured out why she's called a Jewish Athlete (!!; oxymoron alerts aside)??? Maybe it's just because the original feed was from an Israeli paper. Oi vey, her mother must be so proud of her.

Indeed. These people have not been informed, and most self promoters would have informed them. She did this time, at least.

No joking. This rivals the black face white chick from Spokane for comically self-absorbed attention whoring stupidity, though to use a Wagylian logic her little support foundation might well provide her with a nice lifestyle free from economically enforced dieting or Dream Blockers (Beware!!!!!!) like having to work. Hopefully most of her funding comes from overindulgent parents; anybody actually donating to her delusions should be charged for contributing to some sort of mental and social media delinquency.

Let's be thankful she wasn't trying the first nude crossing of the Pacific, otherwise it might have upset the local Subduction Zone Gods.

Sonya Baumstein Could Be First Female To Row Solo Across Pacific From Japan To U.S.
Sonya Baumstein lay in bed one sleepless night and wept softly as she pondered her upcoming attempt to cross the Pacific Ocean alone in a rowboat.

"I was just thinking about the fact that I'm going to be leaving everything that I love for a really long time," Baumstein said of her planned 6,000-mile (9,600 km) odyssey. "And I don't know the consequences."

The 30-year-old from Port Townsend, Washington, has undertaken endurance feats in the past but her journey from Japan to San Francisco, expected to start around May 18, is her most daunting adventure yet.

The four- to six-month trip is an endeavor no woman has ever accomplished solo.

Despite 16 attempts to row solo across the Pacific, only two men have successfully completed the journey - Frenchmen Gerard d'Aboville in 1991 and Emmanuel Coindre in 2005, according to Ocean Rowing Society records.

"Once she leaves Japan, the next person she'll see will be in San Francisco," said Andrew Cull, the journey's operation manager. "Unless maybe someone in a fishing vessel stops by to say 'Hi' in the middle of the ocean."

Baumstein will take off on her custom-made 23-foot (7 meters), 775-pound (350 kg) boat with 1,200 pounds (544 kg) of freeze-dried food, 180 high-carbohydrate drink supplements and a cache of olive oil that she will consume in hopes of retaining as much weight as possible.

The carbon and kevlar boat weighs in at a light 660 pounds (300 kg) and will have on board an electric water maker that desalinates seawater for drinking.

Baumstein, who was recruited as a rower by the University of Wisconsin-Madison before a car accident derailed her collegiate athletic career, expects to burn to up 10,000 calories a day and has gained 40 pounds (18 kg) for the trip. Her bathroom on board will be a bucket.

She has a team that will aid her from land via satellite phone, she will be tracked by GPS, and will have an emergency beacon in case of trouble, but there will be no support vessel. She will be rowing up to 16 hours a day in a boat without a motor or sail.

"Sonya's not crazy," said Cull. "She's driven. Maybe a little bit bullheaded. She gets an idea in her head and will do anything necessary to get it done."

Baumstein has a master's degree in non-profit management, yet Cull said she has spent three years doing nothing but preparing for the trip, which is funded largely by commercial sponsors.

OK, so the HuffPo link is more forthcoming with facts than her website: The Atlantic row was part of a four person team, No 270 here, one of 16 teams participating in a transoceanic rowing race.

Part of me hopes that she is referring to how she will shower, but that part of me is also not very confident.

I suppose saying that she will use a bucket as her head would only trip the landlubbers up even more.

I wouldn't be surprised if it doubled as both....

Anyone else find it funny that her boat probably cost more money than a home here and yet it has no pooper seat? Even the jiji/baba types from the local home center would be better than her trying to balance over a bucket.

More subtul than: "I have to take a dump tell them not to call the bomb squad even if it get messy I had Taco Bell for noon and last time i clogged the plumbing for the whole block and shattered the porcelain. After we should try the apple pie it's delicious here"

I hate to tell you this, but whether you use the direct method, or through the intermediate step of using a bucket, the end result is the same.
