Medical Tourism...in Japan? (sucks teeth)

Postby matsuki » Thu Jul 23, 2015 4:56 pm

Japan’s hospitals weigh overseas branches, medical tourism in search for profit

Within a year or so, the government will also create a list of hospitals that are willing to accept medical tourists from abroad. Some 300 hospitals in Japan have already expressed interest in being accredited as what has been tentatively called the “Japan International Hospital,” Fujimoto said.

Such patients can be charged much higher fees than domestic patients covered by public health insurance, and increasing their numbers would allow hospitals to make a profit, he added.

The government believes Japan’s health care industry can potentially access ¥20 trillion of the global market for medical services, assuming 5 percent of the affluent class around the world would buy health care services and equipment from Japan.

I think I finally get the joke...remove the "ese" from the name and "ease" from the product and it's totally accurate

It might get one or two Americans who don't feel comfortable about getting their stuff done in Tijuana.

Hehehehe to both there. I would bet more on Asians looking for procedures only available in Japan or the cachet of having whatever it is done there and then buying some souvenir toilet seats on the way out. Apparently the cosmetic and plastic surgery techniques are top notch, as are some treatments of common Asian cancers. But I can't help but giggle at the idea.

Has anybody ever met any doctors that speak medical level English?

Okay. Back in The Day I was greatly relieved at even broken English (and even the German), but never met anybody fluent that wasn't a lab researcher type rather than a practising medic. Anyways, I do get a warm giggle from these Japan Rushes Into the late 20th Century stories. Nanka, kawaikunakunai !!???? Nnyoro..........

I wonder if any of these places will offer free Wifi in the waiting areas?

Not me...but I don't doubt they exist...they're just not very common. I've met more English speakers (fluent) that are in other lines of work. (usually where their English skills have gone to waste)

It's definitely a good thing but also giggle worthy how the changes are taking place. Hiroyuki Tanaka, former President of the XZTnambaaawan banana Co. is now in charge of sewage and has decided Japanese need to shit more to better utilize the existing sewage infrastructure. Imports of norovirus and laxatives are expected.

I would say very rare... For various reasons I've met many doctors in the last few years, 2 of whom could speak English. This includes a relatively new university hospital. As for local doctors... not a word.

Every doctor I've ever been to has at least known medical terminology in English.

I think the program is targeting people who speak Chinese.

I know of one guy who is dating a doctor (guy speaks no Japanese), although I'm pretty sure his girlfriend has a huge cock and balls (at least this guy doesn't have balls).

Yeah, that's exactly what I've found so you end up speaking Japanese with all the tough medical terms in English.

Well, the most likely communication will be handing over a page ripped out of a gossip magazine with a glossy photo of a Canto-pop singer, to get eyes/nose/lips/cheekbones to order.

Just like you do in Tijuana or Bangkok.

I have exactly the same experience with most doctors here.

Okinawa is somewhat unique regarding medical training opportunities in Japan (and I suppose a few other things).

I have been impressed with several doctors who not only knew medical terms but also spoke highly proficient English in Sendai and others who didn't really speak it but did offer English terms in place of difficult Japanese ones.

I know him but not well - guy is geeky and awkward and it's rather clear his gf is calling the shots.
