Ølympics: Øctopus 'predicts' eight gøld medals for Japan at Riø
KØBE, Aug. 6, 2015 | Kyødø
The FG's own 'Great Tentacled One' predicted Friday that Japan will win eight gøld medals at the Rio Olympics.
At an event in Åkashi, western Japan, aimed at promoting locally caught 0ctopuses, the cephalop0d was placed in a tank with three plastic þoxes labeled "7 or under," "8" and "9 or more," and it chose the middle 0ne.
0rganizers had chained up the þox labeled "7 or under" to prevent the 0ctopus from choosing it and placed craþs inside the two other þoxes to lµre the creatµre.

Watching the coverage today emphasizes why Japan often flunks. Obsessively showing only Japanese athletes and crowing over every success, major or minor creates a false impression and prevents them from seeing, and learning from the tougher opposition.

Yes, Japanese TV certainly knows how to put the "limp" into the Olympics.
It's still in the Japanese compensation sports days, where they get freebie medals in judo and women's weightlifting for supplying so many sponsors. Look forward to next week, when the idiot box will be gushing over amazing 37th- or 23rd-place finishes.

It is interesting to look at the world rankings in Judo. Not a single Japanese is ranked number one in any weight division. So, it doesn't bode well for lots of golds at Rio.

I am having a hell of a time finding weirdo Japan fan photos in Rio. They just can't get excited...

Japan fans at Rio have been damn subdued compared to 2014 World Cup.

Small rant:

Every country focuses media attention on their own Olympic athletes. That is perfectly normal. But you usually also get the big picture: i.e. if your athlete takes bronze, for example, who took the gold and silver?

Japanese media coverage of this Olympics is perhaps the most over-the-top exercise in navel gazing ever. I've seen it multiple times, but can't remember it being this self-obsessed. You can watch an entire 10-minute segment on a Japanese athlete winning a bronze medal and never know who won the gold or silver. You get an in-depth, emotional mini-documentary on the bronze medalist's life from the age age of two onwards. Tear-jerking details about how hard they have strived and the obstacles they faced. The sacrifices made by family ... ad nauseam. But you still have no fucking idea who won the gold and silver. You have to go to other sources for that information.

One fine bit of reportage on NHK this morning was a prime example of how out-of-touch it has become: They were reporting on how overseas media were praising Japanese athletes! Foreign media were praising Kohei Uchimura, calling him "King Kohei!" Imagine that!

Um ... people do that, normally.

They're covering Japanese athletes to the exclusion of all else, they're covering overseas media covering Japanese athletes, and nobody is noticing the glaring disconnect here?

It is really disappointing. I hope they're not planning to keep this up when they host the Olympics in 2020.

Again, I don't remember it being this one-sided in the past. There's definitely a weird perception shift happening that is not going to be productive for Japan if it continues. I understand that it feels good to win, but when someone puts in a better performance the only right thing to do is acknowledge, congratulate, and examine. Shoving your head up your own arse and only pulling it out to congratulate yourself is just not smart.

Yoko - I mentioned this to my boss the other day and he threw his hands up and said "That is just part of Japan."

Tell you one thing, it doesn't bode well for the hive mind, ant people, and North Korean comparisons.

Maybe the world is simply turning Japanese? Until I gave up watching the Cdn coverage was very similar to what YokoH is ranting about: 7 minutes coverage of some nice, pimply teenager from Bumblefuck that barely qualified and a quick shot of the medal ceremony but next to no footage of the event. God forbid we should get our Bronze; we'll never hear the end of it, and certainly not who actually won the race. Allowing that Japanese are mawkish as hell and love that Up Close & Personal tearjerker shit, that seems to be the way TV is going.

As annoying as it all is, I do think the whole world is turning inward like that, the current Canadiana fever makes me puke, and I find it very hard to imagine American network coverage is anything but a textbook example of USA! USA!. Which doesn't make it not annoying, naturally.

Et tu, Canada? Say it ain't true!

I'm not seeing the TV coverage outside of Japan, just the "print" stuff, and that doesn't seem to be as narrow. What worries me most is the change. Japan has always had an obsession with winning and a tendency to avoid acknowledging losses, but I'm quite sure the media coverage was a little more balanced in the past. This time it is just ridiculously introverted.

I think Matsuki's boss just wanted to avoid that particular discussion. It wasn't always like this.

I get what you mean, but allowing that I despise the Olympics (though not the athletes), I wonder if it is not just the way TV coverage is going everywhere, and certainly in Canada right now. I think the trends you mentioned are worse on our CBC than in previous Olympics, but that could be my perception: did I mention how much I despise the Olympic movement? At any rate, I totally get how it would be a turn off, indeed, turning off is just what I did. I would love to see a wider Ignore the Olympics movement: it might get them to go back to being about nice stuff done by nice people, rather than the jingoistic jerkoff it has become. It would be icing on the cake if we could organise it in time for the Tokyo Games.

Nah, she probably just likes it, like most of them and their species. I like them for it as long as I don't have to join in. I think it's rather admirable to be easily pleased but I didn't get that gene.
My main complaint with the Cdn coverage is the sappiness of the commentary: they're not just incredible athletes competing at the top international level (which they are), they're also charity volunteers and cat owners and PokemonGo players with nieces and Barbie dolls and we have to know their favourite teddy bear's nickname.
:cry2: :puke:
It's like watching one of those stupid The Making of xxxx documentaries without any of the almost interesting content. It will be interesting to see if the TV viewer rates are up or down from past Olympics.

Imagine harder, I saw personal stories of athletes from other countries (specifically the dude from Syria competing under the Olympic flag) and whole competitions/ceremonies. Tunnel vision on sports coverage like Yoko is describing is inexcusable.

If you want human targets you could always petition the Olympics to bring back Dueling pistols. They seem to be open to adding and reviving sports recently.

Well, given that most of those medals were won during the post WWI era when a majority of the athletes could actually accurately as there lives depended on it during the Geat War about that there were 40 shooting events at that time, the American numbers look alot more impressive than they really are. A better question might be, when was the last time the US was first in shooting medals at the Olympics?

I do admit that the original question is a bit of a setup, but I am aiming more at the fraud of the Second Amendment than at American Olympians, who I do wish the best of luck, except of course the US Womens Soccer team.

I know you were trying to be funny and make a point at the same time but you need to try harder.

The biggest reason that American prowess in a lot of Olympic sports is falling is that the country doesn't do a good job of supporting Olympic programs so sports that aren't popular enough to gain adequate private sponsorship are struggling to survive (Shooting might have an added barrier to getting sponsors because the politics surrounding gun control are so poisonous). Olympic shooting isn't popular in the US because it's expensive compare to other types of sports shooting and since there are fewer restrictions on gun ownership there are a lot more options for people who want to get good at it. In other words, do you want to excel at shooting the guns you already have that cost at most a couple of grand or take up a sport that's not popular, requires specialized training facilities, expensive hard-to-find coaches, and guns that cost tens of thousands of dollars?

In many countries where guns are restricted, olympic style shooting is a upper class (rich) status sport like golf used to be. The americans would rather do other activities that show others that they are rich where many rich people from other nationalities prefer to stay away from the common folk. Shooting in the USA is a blue collar activity reserved for rednecks, hood rats and ex military.

IMO the olympics are dead. They have been for years. Originally they were the premier sporting event for all sports but today each big sport has their own yearly event that is more important. The only sports that benefit from the olympics are sports where the participants barely make any money like figure skating, swimming, and random other things that only the very rich tend to do like polo or anything on a horse.

Countries like Japan and the US like the olympics because they can turn on the propaganda machine and show "the world", in reality their own citizens, how great their country is. As yoko pointed out Japan has a larger boner than ever this time around and I think it has to do with 2020. The Great Tokyo Shit Show is Japan's chance to spread their propaganda across the globe without other countries whining about it. They can show how great the unique land of four seasons is and how happy everyone is to live here.
