The Asahi Shimbun

The arrest last week of a man who allegedly sold personal information to loan sharks has uncovered a lucrative underground trade in data on indebted people, police say.

Kiyoshi Tomiyama, 53, was arrested June 16 on suspicion of abetting loan sharks. He ran a company called Sankei Data Service in Saitama Prefecture.

Police say the company sold personal data on at least 1.5 million individuals for 100 million yen to loan sharks with gang connections.

It is the first time the operator of a company compiling personal data has been arrested for such activity.

Just a reminder to all FG that intentionally mistyping your Japanese address on product registrations and contests as well as always using a throw-away email address at Hotmail/Yahoomail/etc is good OpSec.

Big Japanese companies routinely misuse personal info so remember to mix up your Katakana and Kanji in weird but correct ways that only a true F-gaijin can do.

I had a professor in college who said he used a different middle initial on every magazine subscription, warranty card or regsitration he sent in. He did that to track down who sold what information to what other companies.
