Kanagawa Gov. accused of living in Tokyo
MDN June 27
YOKOHAMA -- Kanagawa Gov. Shigefumi Matsuzawa is in hot water after members of opposition parties accused him of living in Tokyo...The Kanagawa Prefectural Assembly set up a special committee Friday to probe the allegation that he has registered his address in Kawasaki despite the fact that he lives with his family in the Tokyo suburb of Komae.

Or Presidents. I remember how the elder Bush had a house in Maine but his legal residence was a hotel room in Texas in order to avoid paying state income taxes.

This can be a weird one to field. I grew up on the east coast of the US, but managed to escape when I was 25. I changed my residency to Seattle while I was in the army, and have claimed to be from there ever since. Even though I live in Tacoma now, I tell people not from the area that I'm from Seattle, just because it's more well-known.

Some people say "where you're from" is where you grew up, but I disagree with that. To me the best answer to the question is whereever feels like home to you. Of course, when you're in a foreign country, you're not "from" there, so I guess in that case the answer would be whereever in your home country feels most like home to you.

It might be more appropriate to ask:

Where were you born?
Where did you reside or spend the majority of your life?
Where are you currently residing?
Where are you going to live when you retire or stop working?

Tacoma's nothing. I have heard people from Centralia claim that they were from the Seattle area (before I told them that I was born and raised in Seattle proper)
