Japanese author convicted of insulting Thai queen
BANGKOK — A 69-year-old Japanese author has received a two-year suspended jail sentence for writing a book that insults Thai Queen Sirikit and other royal family members, officials of the Criminal Court in Bangkok said Wednesday.
The court on Tuesday originally handed Koshi Takahashi a three-year jail term, but commuted it to 18 months as Takahashi pleaded guilty, according to a court official.
In his Japanese-language book titled "Rural Life in Chiang Mai," Takahashi denigrated the queen and other royal family members, according to the court.
