Japan's unemployment rate eased to 5.1 percent in August, the lowest rate in two years, amid signs that rising exports and corporate profits are pushing the economy toward a turnaround.
Data released Tuesday by the government's Labor Force Statistics Office show jobs were added in the retail, medical, services and farming sectors, while construction and manufacturing jobs were shed.
Japan's labor market has stagnated amid a long-term slowdown. The unemployment rate for August was the lowest since it hit 5 percent in August 2001.
