Irishman held in Tokyo drugs bust
rte.ie /news / October 20, 2003
(16:56)
Japanese police are said to have arrested an Irish man at Narita airport on suspicion of attempting to smuggle 17kg of marijuana....It was the third largest amount of marijuana found on a single person attempting to bring the drug into Japan....'The suspect told us that he was asked by a person in South Africa to carry it to Japan'

Sound familiar?

In 2002 Nick Baker, a 32 year old British cook, and father of a one year old son, traveled to Japan in advance of the World Cup. He was arrested at Tokyo's Narita Airport when ecstasy pills and cocaine were found in the false bottom of a suitcase. Nick protested he had been duped by a traveling companion, James Prunier, but Japanese police allowed Prunier to leave the country without questioning him. While Nick was spending some 10 months in solitary confinement for apparently "refusing to confess", it happened that Prunier was arrested in Belgium for allegedly tricking three other British travelers into smuggling drugs.

A man who spent four years in a Japanese prison for a crime he says he did not commit feared he would not survive his ordeal.
Patrick Loughlin, from Penley, near Wrexham, spoke out on Wednesday following his release last week from Nagoya Prison, in Osaka after serving his four-year sentence.

On May 9 2002 Chris left for Zurich with the intention of spending a couple of days working on Shahine's music and then travelling to Tokyo to work with 'G' Thompson. Just before Chris left to catch his flight to Tokyo, Andre asked him to take a garment bag with clothes in to his brother 'G'. The bag was too big to fit into Chris's suitcase so Andre offered to loan Chris a bigger case of his own.
Chris agreed to do this, he had no reason to mistrust Andre.
He thought they had a good working relationship, the suitcase looked fine, he left his own suitcase at Andre's house in Zurich intending to pick it up on the next visit.
At Narita airport Chris went through customs and was stopped and searched.
The suitcase Andre had given him had a false lining and hidden inside was 3 kilos of marijuana, vacuum packed and sandwitched between 2 sheets of plastic.
Chris was arrested.
Of course he denied any knowledge of the marijuana and protested his innocence.

I watched Bangkok Hilton many yrs ago as it was televised here in England.
Great performances from Kidman and the late Denholm Elliott.

This stuff makes me think people should really take the "3 questions" literally - but one of them should be modified.

"Has anyone unknown to you asked you to carry an item on this flight?"

- should read -

"Has anybody asked you to carry any items that don't belong to you on this flight?"

(Though channging it wouldn't do a lot of good at this point, since some airports - like Seattle/Tacoma International - don't use the questions anymore. The TSA said airlines no longer need to ask them.)

There have been too many of these stories for anybody to even consider carrying somebody else's bags on a plane - or especially through customs. I don't care how good of a friend somebody is. If you don't trust that person with your life - literally - you tell them, "Fuck you, carry your own shit through customs."

Color me paranoid, but I'll lose a "friend" before I'll lose 4+ years of my life in an prison. That's a risk I'm more than willing to take.

UPDATE on Nik ...

Convicted Briton says he was drug run patsy
The Japan Times / Oct 28
... a bad choice of friends and, supporters say, the failures of the Japanese police and legal system, cost the 32-year-old Englishman a 14-year jail sentence. The verdict stunned most people involved, given that the average sentence for a murder in Japan is 10-12 years.
The easy-going fencing contractor of last year is now an inmate of Chiba Prison, a hollow-eyed man who suffers from recurring headaches and who has lost over 20 kg since that morning last year. ...

Have any of you smuggled anything into Japan?
I brought in a small revolver that I took apart and put each piece into a different suitcase (I had 4 at the time), and wrapped them up as Xmas gifts last year. I live out in the boondocks and want to know that I am protected.

I was never searched nor did they ask me a thing.. very lucky for me.

I then got my brother to send the ammo in a box full of metal junk. He sent 5 bullets in all.

Now if you believe that story, I've also got a 22 inch pecker too.

Last time i went to Japan a friend of mine asked me to bring a vectrex game system to a japanese retro game collector friend of his.

I was of course stopped at the japanese customs. The guy asked what it was in an uncertain engrish, i replied "it's a game system", "PS2 ? Game cube ?" he asked. Then he opened the box and he just laugh his ass off at my face probably thinking that this was the latest top notch game system from Europe.
While i was leaving the customs area i could still hear him laugh from afar telling the story to his colleagues.

Then you are a fool..

What happened to the Christian - you will go to hell if you sin - ethics that you tell other people to live by.. or is it only for certain rules or laws.

Sorry AO - but you surprise me with this post.

AO, don't do it man. Risking ending up like Nick Baker just to get stoned in Japan is just not worth it. Think of your wife and kids.
