yeah,
foreign "tourists" account for quite a bit of crime.

Bob says to his wife,
"Honey, let's take the kids to Japan, so we can rob them blind, vandalize, and make out with their women."

LOL

Was this a random nationwide survey? I'd like to see what the numbers are for tourist-friendly areas... I'm sure the numbers would be quite different.

Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of people that believe things just like this. Poor victimized Japan being taken advantage of malicious foreigners. I remember seeing a SF(Godzilla?) movie where evil foreigners from the future came back in time in order to destroy Japan's economy. It's a real shame that this kind of blatant propaganda cannot be stopped. With the average person watching this fluff on TV, it's surprising that folk here don't resent us even more. Thank goodness for the smarter ones who can think for themselves and/or know better.

CS, you have hit the nail on the head (and I'm not talking about the one in the Japanese proverb)

I also think that if Japanese tourists go overseas, it's only fair that foreign tourists come to Japan. No ifs, buts, or maybes.

They really should show the breakdown from region to region, age and sex of the respondants. Here's my guess:
- Ugly areas of Kyuushu, male, 50+, truck drivers: "Keep'm home!"
- Mom and Pop crap store sellers in Asakusa: "Keep'm coming!"

They just don't want to have to clean up their country and make it look like it's part of the First World. The reason Japan has such lousy tourism is because (1) Everything is too expensive (2) Credit Cards are not widely Accepted and (3) The Country Paved Over Everything. I'm sure people don't want to travel thousands of mile to look at the national Japanese tree, the telephone pole.

Its not just the country, but its on an individual level too.

People fail to see there OWN mistakes and they make excuses for what they do instead of fixing the problem within themselves.

Same with the government itself.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

Oyaji has a very good point.

I once read that a society gets the government it deserves.

While I see a lot of irresponsibility back home too, I cannot help but notice that a great many people here blame evereyone but themselves. Not only on the streets, I see it at work almost every day also.

(The ones who don't always blame others are generally better educated, and I'm not talking of academic qualifications either)

Some this may be attributed to false pride, the rest is undoubtedly due to apathy. I would like to point out that apathy should not be confused with neutrality, it means not caring one way or the other, whether it be about what others do or taking responsibility for one's own actions.

If peolple are not sufficiently motivated to accept responsibilty for their own actions, it comes as little surprise that their government will reflect their own lack of values.

I'll say it until I'm blue in the face - apologies to the numerous decent citizens that call this great country home.

Why not? What's your goal in life-to sit around moaning about how people are stupid, or to get talking to people (about the benefits of inter-cultural relations, in this case), to try and bring some change about. Some people here seem to have read(or at least heard about) Alex Kerr. Do you think he wrote "Dogs and Demons" just 'cos he felt like moaning?
I find this forum interesting, but are there any Japanese people on here, with whom we could have serious debate? For that matter, does anyone know of such a forum?

Jez, if you are suggesting that anti-foreign or anti-Japanese sentiment can be stopped through inter-cultural exchange I assure you that I am in 100% favor of it.

I would not be the only member of this forum who discusses all manner of topics with my Japanese friends, the majority of which also agree that certain changes would benefit both the local and foreign population.

Talking of which, what am I, as well as all of the other long term residents? We may be foreigners, but we have lived here long enough that we could also be considered as local also.

I subscribe to the maxim, "Home is where you hang your hat". Therefore it is my best interest to improve my long term security living here. While there may be isolationists in Japan, (they also exist in my country) I do not consider Japanese to be particularly racist or biased. I am sure that you would agree that stereotyping 120+ million people is beyond ridiculous.

At the same time, people who promote bias, both foreign and local, pose a real threat to the rest of us that would just live here and try to get on as best we can.

It's very difficult to write about Japan at times, it is a complex and often conflicting situation living here. One thing that I have indeed learned is there really are two sides to every story.

Finally, if you doubt my own attitude toward to Japan, I should tell you that my last foreign friend went home in September of last year. Apart from new friends I have made on this forum, all of my friends in the non-ether world are Japanese, have been for some time. Then again, I have long since ceased to think of them as Japanese, now I just think of them as people.

If you really want to talk to Japanese, it's actually quite simple. Just open your door and walk outside.

glad to see you're not so fatalistica after all :)
I have a few Japanese friends, but until now, only one has shown any interest in discussing such matters. I think it may be easier for Japanese to discuss these things from behind a screen. My ex-girlfriend(now friend), always gets a headache when the discussion gets to deep

Life goes on long after we ourselves do not

This is understandable. The depth to one wishes to discuss such matters varies according to the individual concerned. (It might also depend on their mood at the time)

I have found that getting to know people before serious discussion to be the most effective method for good conversation, assumptions can only hinder. Also, as a rule, I have found my most modest friends to be the most interesting. They are the type that think and do, rather than talk and watch.
