Does anyone know what happened in Tokyo/Japan today? I wonder what the level of awareness is in this country. What are your experiences/opinions?

What I can't understand is why Aids is so huge in Africa but so minor in Japan. Is it because malnutrition helps the virus spread? Are Africans that much more involved in high risk activities? I mean, I can't hardly believe the promiscuity and condomless insanity taking place in Japan but still the figures remain low. I think, in part it's because the Japanese are so secretive and also a lack of testing but still it's been quite some time and it's nothing like Africa. Here's a pretty disturbing link none-the-less:
http://metropolis.japantoday.com/tokyo/recent/feature.asp

A report by UNAIDS, the joint United Nations program on AIDS/HIV, this year suggests that only around 12,000 of Japan's 127 million residents have HIV.

The World Health Organization, however, is not so confident, citing Japan as one of the most likely candidates for a new wave of HIV infections, with estimates for combined AIDS/HIV cases as high as 50,000 for 2010. This follows a 34 percent surge in the rate of infection in 2001-2002. A complacent attitude toward testing borne through a general misconception that the disease is a foreign problem as well as other stigmatic factors, has led some AIDS experts to believe actual figures could be five times higher than those reported.

"Japan will be ground zero for the next epidemic of HIV infections in Asia," says John F. Mancuso, a representative of VitaSoul Inc., a volunteer group that conducts activities to increase AIDS awareness in Japan. "This will become a national crisis and can very easily bring the medical system of this country to its knees."

maybe it can be explained by education and culture. it is an obvious fact that in developping countries education is not as widespread as in developped countries. Whatever we think and know of education in japan, it is obviously more developped than in the 3rd world. also traditions and religions are more tenacious in the developping world.
Also, while it is apparently not clear where HIV originated,it presumabley started somewhere, and presumabely not in Japan(a guess). We all know how closed Japan was and still is. However, Japan is not immune to HIV, and if people don't come to terms with that fact, there could well be a disaster.

Japan is wading deep in ignorance and arrogance. In 5 maybe 7 years they will hit shock ....reality. In a word FGs - don`t be silly put a condom on your willy

In answer to someones question above - why is Africas HIV curse so much worse than anywhere else - the answer in culture and poverty. In a poorer society people screw, unprotected, like rabbits because there maybe no tommorow. Asks your grandparents - during WW2 , they too droped their morals

Have a look at the BBC page on HIV very informative

Actually, AIDS is highly underreported. And yeah, they gonna have a HUGE shock.

China just recently had to come clean cuz they are catching their shock now after sticking their heads in the sand and acting like they had no problem.

They have over 1Mil cases.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

I am an occasional betting man - I would say Japan has at present about 70,000 HIV infections - this is as optamistic as I can be 8O.

I cannot understand the nations mentality. The pink industry is huge, it is accessable to Tailand, China etc - where businessmen DO use ladies of the night . Lastly Japanese consider withdrawl as an effective contraception. Sheeesh 8O

Japan's AIDS Day conspiracy

Maybe iit's a International Date Line Problem....

Dang, I noticed the same "conspiracy" yesterday. This morning, Dec 2, I'm seeing AIDS Day coverage on NHK TV--they are showing AFRICAN AIDS only and part of Japanese ODA. And other TV station programs are hardly covering it except as part of their "What's Happening in America" news segments.

For example, here's what Kyodo Press has said for past few days:

[1] Dec. 1 (20 :23) U.N. to offer Chinese HIV/AIDS patients discounted drugs - BEIJING
[2] Nov. 27 (21 :37) Japan to consider request for $100 million to AIDS fund - TOKYO

[4] Nov. 26 (18 :40) AIDS epidemic in Asia serious, head of global fund says - TOKYO
[5] Nov. 25 (23 :33) HIV/AIDS epidemic continues, affects 40 mil.: U.N. - GENEVA
[6] Nov. 19 (18 :32) Head of anti-AIDS, TB, malaria fund to visit Japan - TOKYO
[7] Nov. 12 (06 :28) Uganda to launch sero survey to fight AIDS epidemic - KAMPALA

I usually get myself tested for AIDs once a year as part of my annual physical checkup. This year, I had my physical at a Japanese clinic, and I could see the surprise on the nurse's face when I asked for the AIDs test. Happy to report I'm clean as a whistle, but I got the feeling that even asking for an AIDs test was considered odd.

Does everyone here make it a point to get themselves checked annually? I think if you live in Japan and have any kind of an active sex life, you should be getting tested at least once a year.

I have a check up every time I enter a 'non-condom' relationship. That is not very often, because I will not go nama with someone I'm not serious about.

Yeah, I should have stayed with only the middle one Image

Actually I was trying to find out if former porn queen, Ai Iijima, was coming out with disclosure that she has AIDS. After 3,000 nudes pictures I still can't say whether that's true or not. Call it a "public service" ---I search 'em so you don't have to.

Are you kidding? Have you not heard that condoms are not 100% effective in preventing the transmission of AIDS? Unless you are in a totally monogamous relationship with someone who has been tested before and you know hasn't been with another person, it's a good idea to be tested at least on an annual basis (or so I've read on those pamphlets in the doctor's office).

By that you mean it can tear, right? If that's the danger, it's pretty easy to tell...or do you mean sperm can pass through the condom? If that's the case, I'm not sure what the point of condoms really is.

This is presumabely the danger:
Even used correctly, condoms can break or slip off.

It should be easy to see if that happens. Isn't it? Please reassure me!

look at the above - good answers to your questions.

Condoms - well made ones (Japans are good if a bit small and tight :D )
- will give you 99.9% protection

Statistically there is a 3-5% failure which is based on misue - not on mechanical failure......

Get it on before you have fun

Good on you for getting tested. I just have a thought. At a place that does the health checks like that do you trust them 100%? They are health officials so you should be able to but for me I have my doubts. I can just hear the gossip. "That gaijin thinks he might have AIDS." Or if the test did come back positve would they respect your anonymity? Maybe you don't care and that's cool because it's certainly nothing to be ashamed of, keeping tabs on your health. Sorry if I'm being presumptious. I've been tested in Japan, too. I found a couple numbers of places that do HIV tests BTW. I hope they're current.

You can get large ones in many shops in Japan. Even in normal drug stores. One of them has a UK union Jack (flag) on the front, otheres have a picture of a gaijin with a big nose(well you know what they say). if you really think you are worth it you can buy coquizilla ones in condominia.(I mean worth it as they are very expensive 12 for 5000yen).This is not speaking from person experience.

Those were my concerns, too. But I had no choice at the time about where to go, and privacy didn't matter to me so much because it's just a routine part of my annual physical anyway. Note that if you have the Japanese National Health Insurance, your J-employer may be entitled to see the results (you may also have the option to prevent them from seeing it, but I'm not sure)!

Can you add the names and addresses of the clinics to your post above, instead of just the phone numbers? Some FGs might not want to make a blind phone call.

That may be a good reason to get it done anonymously. Again, I want to be clear that I'm not trying to question your decision in anyway. This isn't the type of subject I would ever want to argue about. I respect your decision 100%. I just think it's an important thing to discuss. Also, I appreciate your candor about getting tested.

Do you have mammory glands in your chest underneath your nipples or is it just pectoral muscle - often shortened to pec's. It is possible these days to have a pectoral implant for men.. that and gluts if you are so inclined.
