Falling land prices haunt regional banks

The accelerating decline in the value of loan collateral is undermining the financial base of rural lenders.

Want to know what really keeps regional bank managers awake at night?

Nonperforming loans? Higher loan-loss provisions? Government inspectors combing their books, perhaps?

True, none of these make for blissful slumber. But here's what keeps them staring at the ceiling: falling land prices.
