He ran away from home when he was 14 and settled with his dog in a cave in a copper mine. He caught snakes, frogs, snails and wild rabbits that he baked and ate. His dog died two years later.

About six years ago, he decided he could not carry on living this way and thought of killing himself, only to be scared out of the idea by the sight of a body at a favourite spot for suicides.

He was given a one-year prison term, suspended for three years, for theft, but has now started a new life as a builder and has just received his first salary...

Now he can afford to buy take-away snakes, frogs & snails.

I can imagine it now: Survivor 23 - Japanese Copper Mine

Yes, who can survive the "wilds" of Tsukuba City, some 50km north of Tokyo?
