I love that movie.

The list is above. I'm kinda mad that the Matrix isn't on there.

And let's not forget Murray's Best Actor nomination or Sofia's other nod for Best Original Screenplay.

I'm not. The effects in the Matrix sequels were little more than a masturbatory "look what we can do! aren't we the kewlest?!?" kind of exercise. For the most part, they did very little to move the story along and were there for a gee-whiz factor.

The films that did get nominated for visual effects:
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

used theirs as part of the story, not just to induce Neo-esque "whoa"s from the audience. When I saw RoTK, I didn't spend any time thinking about the effects. I was enjoying the movie too much. The Matrix sequels had the opposite effect on me.

(But the fact that there are only 3 nominations for effects is kind of surprising.)

I'm not in Japan, so how would I know about it being in the newspapers.

Though I should have known.

I was watching Fujisankei news and they had a blurb about him on there.

I loved Lost In Translation because of its subleties. The hazy jetlagged opening sequence of tokyo as seen from a cab, The beautiful Kyoto scene, The music (Squarepusher, Air, Kevin Shields on the same soundtrack. Wow). To top the whole shebang off, the excellent intimacy between Charlotte and Bob was so well done, it was as if they weren't acting at all.
