Soccer sucks. I played it for four years as a kid, and let me tell you, b-o-r-i-n-g. I'll take NBA over soccer any day of the week. :?

Soccer in the US

Postby GuyJean » Sat Jun 15, 2002 12:17 pm

I've been getting into the games... errr.. matches(?).. But I think I know why Americans don't like to watch soccer..

1- A 0-0 tie is a fun game to watch?! Why the hell even play if you can end up how you started. There MUST be a winner and loser, otherwise WHY!?

2- It's too inexact. Yeah.. 'About' 2 minutes in lost time.. Maybe 1:57, or 2:25.. Whatever; Take the throw-in here or 5 feet further up.. You choose.

3- A guy needs a stretcher to get off the field, but then jumps to his feet on the sidelines.

4- Too much 'flopping'. (Although it DOES get rough)

To be honest, I've really enjoyed watching the World Cup. But to watch this game everyday, when there's no 'nationalism' involved... Hhhhhhmmm?

Just my too scents.

Soccer "complaints"

Yeah, the flopping is funny. A slight tap on the shoulder and the guy goes flailing to the ground, rolling five or six times and holding his knee in mock agony.

Can I add to this list?
5) forbidden use of hands/arms: the limitation on hands/arms seems like too much of a restriction on the kind of action you want to see in a sport

6) a line of men grabbing their crotches before a penalty kick

7) the inability to bring back your substituted players

All that being said (in good fun), I have also been watching the Cup myself and cheering for various teams (mostly England, Japan, USA).

Re: U.S. wins border war

Postby cstaylor » Tue Jun 18, 2002 10:06 am

In the rest of the world, they used to call us the sleeping giant, and the sleeping giant has awakened. We now have the respect we deserve.
This is another one of my pet peeves: when idiots in sports make ignorant comparisons between their particular GAME and a world conflagaration. The they of course was Isoroku Yamamoto, Admiral of the Imperial Japanese Fleet during the War in the Pacific. Hundreds of thousands of young men wearing the flags of several nations died in forgotten battles on forgotten islands during that nasty four year period, and yet sixty years later we have this baffoon trying to compare his second-round soccer victory to the war.

I wonder what the response would have been if he had made the analogy of blacks freed from slavery instead? Why can't these sports morons put things into the proper perspective?
Well, we got lucky... I mean, it's a game, right? We go out there, and do our best, and the other side does their best, but in the end we all take our chances on the outcome. Fortunately everyone one walks away whole from the match. I'm glad that the countries of the world have decided to pitch nationalism onto the glorious field of game rather than on the killing fields of the battlegrounds
