Sounds kind of like Cayce Pollard, the main character from William Gibson's Pattern Recognition. From an amazon.com reader review:

Protagonist Cayce Pollard is a cool-hunter who makes a living scouting out upcoming trends and passing judgment on advertising logos. Ironically, she is allergic to most brand names and even removes the labels from her clothes.

It was an okay read, but nowhere close to his old stuff. He and Neal Stephenson have both gone downhill over time.

Part of Pattern Regocnition took place in Tokyo - real Tokyo, not the Neo-flavor. I'll give that book one thing, it's where I learned about Bikkle:

Japan Is Pop Culture Leader?

Japan as world leader in pop culture

TOKYO -- The supernova known as Japan Inc. may be dimming as a manufacturing powerhouse. But while its mainline industries surrender ground to South Korea and China, the planet's second-largest economy has re-emerged as a trailblazer in, of all things, pop culture.

Among the world's fashion and cultural elite, Japan is being compared with Paris of the 1920s, a magnet for and source of inspiration to the creative.

Harajuku is perhaps the one place on earth where every day is like Halloween and "outrageous" is the highest form of praise.

Like Paris in the 20's :eeh:
