Blithering about blooming: Japanese call this 'news'

Postby Taro Toporific » Tue Mar 09, 2004 10:15 am

It's that time of year again. The TV "news" consists of nothing but blithering about blooming. ARRRRG! Mrs. Taro has to put chicken wire around the TV to protect it from me throwing things at it when the "Flower Front" fake news comes on again and AGAIN! ARRRRG! This is NOT news.
'Sakura' set to blossom earlyJapan Times, March 9
It set off a flurry of phone calls to weather officials. The big story: Japan
may be on its way to one of its earliest cherry blossom seasons ever. ...

Stop the press!! :)

Reminded me of this article which is an interesting look at NHK news and
how the sakura won out against real news:

I was bemused by NHK's news agenda, which was skewed by the unending calendar of seasonal festivals across the island nation, excruciating hours of talking heads, and soft documentaries about Japan's beautiful places. Because so many of NHK's resources were allocated to this kind of news, it was not easy to fill an all-business program in a country that prided itself on being the world's second-most powerful economic engine.

I've known dozens of FGs who have quit NHK over the years. Very few FG reporters survive the job from more than 2 years. The NHK "Rules", that every reporter carries on a wallet card while on assignment read : Rule 12-- ..."above all, the news must be polite..." Arrrrrg.

cjr.org wrote:Most Japanese journalists live in what I have come to call a culture of censorship, where constant concern about their role in society leads them to hide shocking or unpleasant news, particularly about powerful institutions and corporations. Japanese journalists I know believe American reporters live in what one calls a culture of abandonment, by which they mean we refuse to consider the effect our reporting has on our society

Come on, Taro, you know as well as me that the annual hanami party alcohol poisoning report will follow at the end of the season as well. That is most certainly news. I bet the Daily Yomiuri will have it, along with stats on how many tree-viewing troopers were hauled into the hospital last year for a quick comparison.

holy shit, something that has cultural significance for a nation has news devoted to it. And why, you may ask? because it might come early. Better than 24/7 "terrorist coverage" or the yearly "OMG SANTA IS MAKING IT AROUND THE WORLD" bullshit. enjoy it and stfu.

it's not like you cant just go online and get all your news anyways.

wtf? i never thought of santa as a terrorist... but now that you mention it i shall have to elaborate on this idea some more.

he judges the naughty and nice, and punishes the evil ones with coal. he has the beard and flies in an unconventional aircraft without a license... visiting every house would require him to ignore no-fly zones... he breaks in and leaves wrapped packages... this is just asking for disaster. i propose a preemptive attack launched against this terrorist and his minions of evil.

hmmm....come to think of it, Bin Laden and Santa do have some similar physical traits; except Santa would have to starve himself for a couple of weeks to get that malnourished, gaunt look that bin Laden has perfected.

well at least they report on it at the appropriate time...http://www.fuckedgaijin.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3304&highlight=blossom

besides the report on the news tonight was exciting - some middle aged housewives belting into construction workers in Bunkyo-ku for chopping down some old cherry blossom trees...
