Telstra Corp Ltd said it hoped one million customers would sign up to its new mobile phone internet service within three years, as more Australians start to use their mobile phones for data instead of just phone calls.
Telstra's group managing director Ted Pretty said he believed the i-mode internet service would boost mobile data revenue by about 30 per cent, based on the experience of European telcos who have taken up the service.
Telstra signed a licensing agreement with Japan's biggest mobile phone company, NTT DoCoMo Inc, giving it exclusive use of i-mode in Australia.
