The boy's eye was injured by a shard of glass
A 10-year-old Iraq boy who was partially blinded during a battle between US troops and insurgents, has undergone surgery in Japan.
Mohamad Saleh arrived in Japan last week on a trip arranged by veteran Japanese journalist Shinsuke Hashida who was killed last month in Iraq. ....................

Very kind of them. Some people can now feel "international" then! I wonder was he spoken to in Engrish or Arabic wilst in Japan? All gaijins regardless of how fucked they are should speak Engrish in Japan

Surely if they are spending this sort of money - 30 min on a seemingly minor procedure should be carried out in safe areas of Iraq or Kuwait - not flown black to Japan - for the same money 3 or maybe 4 kids could have been treated.....

I think the was brought here as a tool.. a tool of Japan to look good in the eye of the world. I'm sure they had a translator nearby...

I think this is a kind act and it does do well for Japan's image.. and also considering the news reporter who died helping this boy might also have something to do with him coming to Japan for the surgery.

But when he goes back home, what fate awaits him?? That is what I'd be concerned about.

Clearly a publicity stunt.

Mohammed's Big Adventure...

Postby djgizmoe » Sun Jun 13, 2004 7:45 pm

Actually, from what I've heard, Mohammed was brought here by the Numazu Lion's Club. Numazu, a small town about 10 minutes from my house here in Shizuoka, has been paying for this, with donations from local Shizuoka-ites, so I think that it is a little off-base to see it as a publicity stunt on the national level or complain that Japan could have brought more kids over here for operations. And didn't this all come about because some local veteran war photographer got killed trying to help Mohammed get treatment? It IS however a big publicity stunt on the local level (I've never seen Numazu in the national press so much until now), and the press has taken it up as a feel-good Iraq story to counteract the mostly depressing news from the front (kidnappings, etc.).
There is nothing more noble than impassioned nonsense.
