YOKOHAMA --A man believed to be in his 60s who was arrested for shoplifting and refused to reveal his identity in court was given 18 months in prison Monday at the Yokohama District Court. The man stole two boxes of candy worth around 200 yen at a supermarket in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, on June 2....The man, with a deep suntan, who appeared to be around 60 years old, then bowed deeply in court without saying a word...

Yes but you can't just let people steal. I stole a candy bar when I was a kid and I never forgot the shock and embarresment of getting caught. Of course I went on to steal bigger stuff like cars but . . . well . . . I guess I don't have a point.

I think a warning would have sufficed and a return of the product or payment for the item. 18 months in jail will cost a lot more money than that choco snack...
