"A reporter from a Japanese newspaper asked me, 'Don't you think the British coverage of this case is racist?' I said possibly, that there probably was an element of that. She wanted to know why British reporters were focusing on the sex bars in Roppongi. 'You're just concentrating on the dirty side of Japan,' she said. And I said, 'Yeah, we are--that's how this (Blackman's death) happened.'"

I don't know where to begin with this... now who's the racist? Why does one person's actions reflect poorly on an entire country? :roll:

He denies that he was ever under any editorial pressure regarding the type of story he should write. Defining the criteria for his selection of a "soft" news story, Kristof said: "I think the trick is to look at aspects of a country like Japan that may be funny or have some exotic element and conjecture some kind of larger truth about the society.
