Guardian, UK - 30 July
TOKYO (AP) -
Crown Princess Masako, out of the public spotlight for months, has been diagnosed with adjustment disorder. ...generally defined as a psychological problem caused by a major life change. An Imperal Household Agency official declined to comment.

Grounds for divorce

I read somewhere that some advisors were telling the crown prince to dump Masako-sama for a new wife. If they could find some problem, especially something mental, then it wouldn't look too bad to dump her and find a wife who could produce a boy. Is this the beginning of the end for poor old Masako? :shakeh:

Mr Hayashida all but confirmed rumours that the princess has been depressed by referring to "depressive feelings" that have made it difficult for her to carry out duties. She is receiving psychotherapy and prescription drugs...
Crown Prince Naruhito has suggested that a lack of overseas trips had also played a part in her becoming ill. Masako has been abroad five times since the wedding....

I second that. What the hell is 'adjustment disorder'? Apparently the US has been classifying anything and everything as a disorder so 1) it can be covered by insurance and 2) it can be 'cured' by a very expensive psychologist covered under 1).

I wonder if all this spin has something to do with old guard trying to marginalize the power of a 'commoner' who will be the mother of Japan's first - in modern times - Empress (Aiko) in say 20 years from now.

They would be able to point to Masako's "history of mental illness" as she will be entering into the potential dementia years stage by then, perhaps in an effort to reduce her potential influence on her ruling daughter. Just a thought.
