Viability of Korea-Japan Tunnel Questioned
(Korea Times) Aug 17
...If the construction of the tunnel between the two countries is realized, it will be at least 200 kilometers long, which is about four times longer than the world's longest 53.9-kilometer-long Seikan tunnel in Japan that connects Japan's Honshu and Hokkaido. The construction of the tunnel is expected to take at least 30 years and cost 62 trillion won to 104 trillion won.
However, the perceived project has stirred strong controversy in Korea for reasons such as the astronomical cost and time that will be necessary for the project, technical problems, and anti-Japanese sentiment still existing among some Koreans. .
...The Ministry of Construction and Transportation said there are no suitable financial resources and that the undersea tunnel is so long that it would be less efficient than air or surface shipments. The Korea Railroad Research Institute and the Korea Transport Institute presented a report containing the same conclusion last year.

They'd be better off spending the money fixing up the tunnels between North and South Korea. Those things are in terrible shape! :D

A water diversion tunnel under construction in northeast China is set to become the world's longest manmade tunnel, and is currently less than four kilometers short of the record. The tunnel Liaoning Province has progressed 53.13 km and will soon break the record held by Switzerland's 57-km Gotthard Base Tunnel, according to project managers.
http://www.terradaily.com/reports/China_Water_Diversion_Tunnel_To_Set_New_World_Record_999.html
The tunnel -- with a diameter of eight meters and running through 50 hills, 50 river valleys and 29 geographic faults -- will be 85.3 km long on completion in 2008. Jiao Yong, Vice Minister of Water Resources, said in Liaoning on Tuesday that the tunnel and diversion pipelines with a total length of 231 km will bring water from the Dahuofang Reservoir in the east of Liaoning to 10 million people in six industrial cities in the province's central region.
