If they'd already been to Oz by then, they would've discovered the Aussie way of shortcuts and wouldn't have needed to map the North Passage themselves.

Here's how it works: You pay some locals (eskimos) for their maps (and the FG post "Gaijin Kogals" suggests that eskimo's maps are quite popular ), then you go to the pub for the rest of the time you've been given to do the job, and spend your budget much more wisely (on wine, women and song) than freezing your arse off on a boat full of seamen off the coast of Greenland.

I remember seeing a documentary on this.
They were aboribinees who had somehow managed to cross to Amereica.
According to that show they were wiped out by the incoming horde of mongoloids. Although they said they had found skeletal evidence as well as what appeared to be a mongoloid/aboriginal interbreeding in DNA in some group down in the southernmost parts of Argentina.
