Charles Shull, associate professor of sociology at Lynchburg College in Virginia, toured Osaka's Amerika Mura recently as part of his research into changing fashions among young Americans and Japanese.

Oh yeah, like we're supposed to believe some jackhole from podunk university in Virginia who visits a few neighborhoods in Japan, makes a few observations while walking along the street, and supposedly comes to an epiphany about youth culture in Japan? Sounds like the guy was on a weekend shopping trip and took a few notes along the way.

By the way, I used to live in Virginia and hated it. So that's where the chip on my shoulder comes from. Still, this article hardly talks about anything new but sounds like its written by someone who just discovered the lightbulb that went on over his head.

Exactly....and it's becoming a bigger and bigger issue as academic interest in Japan is growing. People with no background (or possibly just not enough background) in Japan go into popular places in Tokyo or Osaka and take notice of Japanese peculiarities that are really nothing new, only to coin them as 'the new wave of Japan' in an attempt to benefit their own self-interests.....this is the case for everything from fashion to sexuality to entertainment, and I don't see an end to it anytime soon.
