Bear Breaks Into Nursing Home in Japan

TOKYO - A baby bear stunned residents of a nursing home in western Japan Tuesday when it broke through the front door and pounded through the facility, police said. There were no injuries to the five staff and some 100 elderly occupants of the home.

But the early morning intrusion followed a string of incidents in the same area earlier this month, when a bear attacked three people, injuring two, before it was shot dead.

On Tuesday, the 3.3-foot tall bear broke through a glass door at the Jorakuen elderly home in the town of Kamiichi, a Toyama prefectural (state) police spokesman said.

The bear, weighing about 110 pounds, fled after a staff member shouted loudly. But it returned a few minutes later to roam inside the home, crushing plastic doors leading into the residents' rooms before leaving, the police spokesman said.

Police and local hunters were searching for the young bear.

Thirteen people have been injured in 12 bear attacks in Toyama this year, according to police. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

Brown bears are commonly spotted in Japan, especially on the northernmost main island of Hokkaido. While mostly responsible for crop damage, they have been known to attack humans and on occasion cause fatalities.

Good to know that this nation's seniors can spend their golden years in a peaceful, security-free environment...A 3 foot baby bear was able to crush the PLASTIC doors leading to residents' rooms!?! What the hell was that place made of, cellophane and duck tape?

Oh, this is just silly, it was Asskissinger in a bear suit, he knows it, you know it, soon all the children milling innocently around the chain link fence will know it.

Is this a separate incident?

Rampaging bear shot dead after attacking 3 elderly people
Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Oct. 11, 2004: TOYAMA -- A bear was shot dead after attacking three elderly people here early Monday morning, police said.

At around 6 a.m., Toyama Prefectural Police received an emergency call from a resident reporting that a bear had run away from a park in the Tsukiokanishi Mirodicho district of Toyama. Officers went on alert and asked hunters to prepare to shoot the animal.

However, over a one-hour period after the alert went out, the bear attacked and injured three elderly people, according to local police

Zoo breeder dies from bear bite

TOYAMA -- A breeder at a city-run zoo here died after being bitten by a bear he was looking after Saturday morning, police said.

At around 11:30 a.m., Isao Tanada, 59, a breeder at Toyama Municipal Family Park Zoo in the city's Furusawa district, was bitten by a bear in a cage, local police said. He was rushed to hospital where he died shortly afterwards.

This is kinda odd...

Today I was walking through Denden town (Osaka's Akikabara) I looked into one of those shops that sells knives, stun guns, replica guns, all sorts of odd stuff. They had bear repellant.

"Huh?? Bear repellant? In JAPAN!?" But I guess it could be useful...

Old woman badly hurt in tussle with bear

NAMERIKAWA, Toyama -- An 81-year-old woman sustained severe injuries to her face and skull after she was suddenly attacked by a bear near her home here over the weekend, police said.

Hunters launched a search for the Asiatic black bear that attacked Sumiko Yamada, but were unable to find it.

Police have urged people in the area to be on the lookout for roaming bears.

Police said Yamada was walking through rice paddies about 1 kilometer away from her home when the bear suddenly leaped out and attacked her on Sunday. She broke free from the bear, crawled to her home where her relative called for an ambulance.

The size and shape of its paw prints indicated that the bear was a small Asiatic black bear.

The bear was the first sighted this year in the region. (Mainichi

They probably also have gaijin repellant.

FWIW, the worst of these bare bears is the Hokkaido Brown. It is the second largest bear in the world only to the Kodiak/Brown bear of Alaska to which it is closely akin. It is not your loveable stuffed panda or teddy bear, standing they can reach over ten feet (or so it is said). Be that as it may, they are somewhat larger than the average pooch.

bear

Postby Greji » Tue Jun 28, 2005 11:31 am

Actual, the bear had entered the hospital for a check-up, but was turned away as he hadn't registered for Japanese National Health insurance. He was interviewed below and would only state that "they said I was probably an FG and couldn't pay"

Uhh, okay....I'll take your word on that.

Somehow I don't think comparing your posts to beer farts will give them (your posts -- or the beer farts for that matter) a lot of extra credibility.

First time I saw a bear outside of a cage was when I was about 8 years old. I was backpacking in Yeosemite and heard a noise while sleeping. Looked up and it was a bear. I crapped in my pants so fast I didn't even know it happened.
Either the smell or boredom caused the bear to turn around and walk off.
