Nagoya economy is sole winner
Japan Today,-- Nov 1
In a Japanese economy whose prospects remain unclear, the Nagoya region is enjoying sustained growth....
....Nagoya is home to many successful companies and has low unemployment and a continuing labor shortage, he reports, adding that goods exported from the port of Nagoya account for 90% of Japan's trade surplus ...more...

Washinton Post: Japanese City Finds It's Hip to Be Uncool
NAGOYA, Japan -- For decades, even centuries, this city at the core of Japan's third-largest metropolis got no respect. Comedians joked about Nagoyans' taste for fried foods and gaudy fashions and poked fun at their quirky dialect. Long the nation's car manufacturing center and geographically sandwiched between cosmopolitan Tokyo and sassy Osaka, the Nagoya area in central Japan was viewed as this country's equivalent of the American Midwest.
But the sophisticates in Tokyo and Osaka aren't laughing anymore. In a nation still struggling to find its footing after a 13-year economic slump, Nagoya is riding high as Japan's city of the moment. With an economic growth rate of 2.8 percent, greater Nagoya -- home to 7.2 million people and some of Japan's most successful companies, most notably Toyota Motor Corp. -- is sizzling along at more than double the national average. The region boasts an unemployment rate of 3.5 percent, markedly lower than the national rate of 4.7 percent, according to government statistics...more...

Actually, I've been told that Nagoya has more "Health" Clubs and the like, as well as Manga-Kisa than anywhere in Japan. In respect to Tokyo and Osaka, Nagoyans tend to be a bit more conservative, and economically conservative (so I hear).

Heya Steve, I hear they took the Goldfish off the top of Nagoya-Jyo to tour it around for the expo.

Expo is the big thing right now.

I walk around Nagoya central park and get coffee / sandwiches and other goodies for free. Up the road at Seto it's even better free drink from every brewery in Japan. Got a nice 10 Kilo cheese from a company in Hokkaido yesterday. I going back today to bag a couple of cured hams.

Free eating at about forty different restaurants and bags and bags of Free stuff. I haven't the heart to tell them I live here. It would sorta spoil their fun.

You can get taxi tokens for free rides anywhere within the city from the front gate and there is a eat/drink as much as you like for 100 yen at two hotels in the evening.

Plus lots of electronic freebies.

I'll be in Nagoya on the 8th of April but we'll only be staying for one night so I dont think we'll make it to the free food Expo, sadly.

That's something that I've always found in my time researching stuff about the city. People use Nagoya as a stopover when they're on their way to bigger and better things. It could partly be because it's situated right in the middle of a busy travel path, but I think there may be more to it.

Nagoya seems like an afterthought like, "Oh yeah, we spent an evening drinking in Nagoya; it was just okay." Stuff like that.

Isn't there a Magic the Gathering tournament in Nagoya? Jeeze.

Hahahah - Yattokameda namo, Omiya-san iri'yase!

One other Nagoyan factoid is that it is the sister city to Los Angeles.
There is some really cool stuff around Nagoya actually, you have to bike or walk around to see some of it, and it's nice and central to get to other cities. The only place I've had to goto that I really didn't like was Anjo.
At least the trains here make sense.

I am so looking forward to going there. I swear, I have bedsores on my ass from writing so many essays and studying for exams, which I negotiated to have crammed into next week so that I can leave next Saturday.
