Japanese Government Bans My Speech
JUKI net is Japan's national ID system. I performed a security audit of the system for Nagano Prefecture one year ago]
Its been a long day. I am greatly disappointed that Soumushou, the Japanese government that maintains JUKI net, prevented me from speaking today at the PacSec security conference. Soumushou prevented my talk by threatening the Japanese event who currently are seeking contracts from the government
The Japanese government gave me two options.
1) Do not talk
2) Drastically change your slides to say what they want me to
When I offered to not use slides at all and give my own opinion they told me that I would not be permitted to speak AT ALL ...more...

I don't get it, is that guy/girl Japanese or gaijin? If gaijin, why would they have a gaijin performing a security audit of their system?

I'd be interested to hear what he has to say. Sadly, the Great Chinese Firewall or at least my connection doesn't seem to want to connect to the page. Anyone mine posting it/sending me a copy... :oops:

Back to work

I have spent way too much time trying to resolve the issue of Soumusho censoring my talk at PacSec. I have clients and staff in America I need to start attending to again. Anyway, I am a little tired, its been a long two weeks. I am in the process of giving the facts, evidence and emails to my lawyers here in Japan and they are providing me with various options. I would really hate to take this issue to court but my options are disappearing as each day passes.

Interesting thing I learned today, the Japanese company that told me I could not present because of Soumusho's request hired a crisis management company the day of my talk and that company told various members of the media that I would be holding a seperate press conference this week. This is interesting because I had no plans to. In fact the day of my talk I was schedualed to leave this Tuesday, how was I supposed to have a press conference? They convinced a television crew from Nagano to leave and possibly others before someone brought it to my attention.

I am preparing now for another conference in Hawaii this January where I will talk about VOIP Security. Lucky for me PTC'05 is not endorsed by the Japanese government.

Extending my stay in Japan

Looks like I will be extending my stay in Japan while I try to resolve what has happened this week. I'm hoping it will be done this week. Thanks for all the support and please continue it. If more people speak up, then the powers that be will be convinced that people really DO care about freedom of speech.

Some Media Followup...

Japanese media covered the cancellation of my talk yesterday. The two largest newspapers in Japan have both written pieces on it. Asahi Shimbun andMainichi Shimbun.

I am still contemplating what I should do. I've been busy in meetings with various "people of importance" and I will have to make some really critical decisions in the next few days. See what happens.

The Japanese government gave me two options.

When I offered to not use slides at all and give my own opinion they told me that I would not be permitted to speak AT ALL. It is obvious to me that they did not have an issue with my slides or presentation. They were afraid that I would draw attention to problems in JUKI net. Soumushou thinks that they can hide from the issues. They think that if they keep people from speaking about the issues, it will go away. I thought I would be immune from such Japanese government pressures however I underestimated Soumushou's ability to manipulate those around me.

Soumushou's reason for forbidding me to speak was this "Since we are endorsing the convention we have to right to tell you not to speak" if this is the case, the Japanese government needs only sponsor or endorse ANY event in which they don't agree with and force the organizers to change the content. If this is the case Japan will never make any progress towards a safer environment.

What is most upsetting to me is the fact that I HAD NO PLANS TO CRITIZE the Japanese government. My talk was going to be extremely fair and balanced addressing the issues raised by both sides. In fact I invited Soumushou to meet with me directly so that I can address any issues they may have. I told them this on the telephone and by email. Instead they choose to pressure the Japanese representatives of the conference. They never attempted to talk with me directly. Why is this?

If they had issues with something I may say why not ask me about it? Why pressure a company they relies on government contracts? Is this fair? The purpose of my talk was to present both sides of JUKI net security systems. I have no vested interest in seeing it fail or in seeing it succeed. I only wanted to recommend how best to make it safer, how best to improve the system. But Soumushou believed that my recommendations on how to improve its security alone would mean that JUKI net has problems and they refused to admit this. I'm sorry to tell them but it does have security problems. The good news is that the technical issues can be easily resolved. However the greatest problem with JUKI net is not technical but Soumushou's inability to even acknowledge that they exist! How can a system become secure if the Japanese government are not willing to listen to someone who points out issues.

Today was a sad day for Japan and a frustrating day for me.

I'm basicly over jetlag now and preparing for the security conference. Apparently a lot of important people are asking questions about what I will say in my presentation. After my presentation I think I will upload my comments so that those of you not in Japan can read it.

Ejovi was a paid presenter at the PacSec.204 conference and he whimped out after his own laywers told him to take it ass and collect his check. His conference presentation is private property of JUKI-Net]T.I.J.[/url] :roll:

Censored security critic sues Japan

A law firm representing Ejovi Nuwere, chief technology officer of SecurityLab Technologies, filed the suit for violation of freedom of speech in Tokyo, claiming punitive damages of &#165]...more...[/i]
Nuwere said he had filed the suit because officials had done little or nothing to resolve disagreements about the contents of the speech, despite his offers to try to reach agreement.
According to Shimizu, legal proceedings could take more than a year.
