MDN: Anti-quake desks to buffer kids
A major furniture manufacturer will market "anti-earthquake desks" for school children as demand for such safety products grows in response to rising anxieties.
The prototype desk the firm unveiled recently is equipped with bars under the desktop for a child to grab during an earthquake. Three panels also surround the desk to protect a child hiding under it from falling glass and debris. Steel legs stronger than regular school desks increase its resistance against falling objects.
