I once not so long ago worked for one of the world's biggest food additives manufacturers (no names, no pack drill 
) that used to use a quantity of not so safe ingedients in small traces. The reasoning behind this was that no one would know, and that is a direct quote from a senior manager, and if someone complained then the manufacturing staff was blamed. I was fired when it was found that I was an experienced QC chemist, or was it because it was pointed out that mustard flavoring could also be called mustard gas when it escaped to the atmosphere?
