Apology for cafes' Hitler message

One is tempted to define man as a rational animal who always loses his temper when he is called upon to act in accordance with the dictates of reason. - Oscar Wilde

The company's managing director, Thomas Neir, wrote in the South China Morning Post that the daily quotes' intention was to be "thought-provoking, educational and entertaining".

"The quote that recently appeared was none of these. It was morally offensive and inexcusable, and we have instituted controls to ensure that an event like this cannot occur again," he said.

Is it just me or is this insane? Would the same reaction have happened if
someone else had of said this? Does the meaning of the quote change
because a prick said it?
I seriously cannot understand the logic. (maybe because there isn`t any)

A quote is a quote

Postby cliffy » Tue Jul 09, 2002 8:09 pm

I have to agree, the content of the quote is accuate but the given speaker is one of history's biggest assholes. Do not forget history is broadcast by the winner, or am I paraphrasing Adolf????
Reality is only for people with no imagination

It's not so much a matter of logic as strong lingering emotions. A lot of people (especially in the Jewish community) are still very sensitive about the Holocaust, so using a quote from someone they feel should be blacklisted from any positive mention in the pages of history is very offensive.

I'm not sure if this would be the best example to use since you live in Kyoto, but this is much like putting an add in the NY Times containing a quote from Osama Bin-Laden about determination or something. If that were to happen, a bunch of New Yorkers (and other Americans) would see it as something in extremely bad taste, and cry and whine until it was removed for the same reasons the Hitler quote was removed.

So, do you Japan dwellers ever see Nazi symbolism in Japan? Is it at all popular (or even known) over there?

Yeah, I know about that symbol and I heard about that problem with the Pokemon card, I wasn't talking about that.

I totally agree with what you say. But i stand by what i said about logic.
Offense, is an idividual responsibility. One takes offense to something because deems they should. Not because of any inherent meaning.
