Takebe suggests delinquents, potential criminals join SDF in Iraq
Kyodo via Japan Today
TOKYO — LDP Secretary General Tsutomu Takebe indicated Thursday it would be a good idea to send delinquent students and people liable to commit crimes to the southern Iraqi city of Samawah as members of the Self-Defense Forces for three months to correct their behavior.

Commenting on the increase in vicious crimes in Japanese society and delinquency at schools, he said, "I don't think the situation will get better even if we revise the Constitution and the Basic Education Law. It may be a wild view, but people's characters will change for the better in three months if they join the SDF and go to Samawah" for reconstruction work. (Kyodo News)

Takebe was Ag Minister during the beginning of the mad cow deal.

Tsutomu Takebe, Japan's Agriculture Minister, jabs at a juicy slab of grilled steak, waves it in the air with chopsticks and pops it in his mouth. "I've never tasted such good beef!" he crows to a crowd of TV cameras and reporters at a hastily arranged press conference. Then Takebe motions to a fellow Cabinet member, Health Minister Chikara Sakaguchi, and announces: "He is a doctor, and he is going to eat it. So see, there are absolutely no problems with Japan's beef!" Sakaguchi dutifully chews and swallows. "Ah, I see now the beef is safe," he proclaims. "It's been sucked into my stomach, and I know for sure it is safe."

What complete and utter fucking tools..

This reminds me of when Obuchi went to Tokaimura to prove the tomatoes were safe by eating them, after the worst nuclear accident in Japan's history occured there; then he died..

Isn't sending thugs overseas to commit war crimes a Japanese cultural tradition?

Giving Junior Achievement crooks guns and teaching them how use is certainly going improve Japanese security.

Japan's Reconstruction Aid Leaves the Citizens of Samawa Desperate
ZNET
Eight months have passed since the Japanese Self-Defense Forces have been deployed in Samawa. Contrary to the Japanese government's intentions, discontent with the performance of the Self-Defense Forces among the citizens of Samawa has rapidly increased. This is a report of the local situation.

"There is no electricity and no water supply. Where is Japanese support?" Walking around on the market place in the center of the city of Samawa, I constantly heard such complaints. Because of security concerns, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Self-Defense Force personnel rarely show their faces to the citizens. While covering events for this article, there were only two Japanese journalists stationed in Samawa. Since the beginning of July, the mood that had initially welcomed Japan has begun to change swiftly.

As Taro would say, 'WOT!?'.. Japanese looking like they're working hard but actually accomplishing little?.. Who would've thunk?

Has the SDF actually built anything there yet? They are engineers by the way. It seems they are hiding on base behind the Dutch protection.
Must be boring as hell for the average solder there not doing anything.

I think they're supposed to be working on the infrastructure; water purification, roads, etc.. But I haven't seen any images of 'completed' projects. Just 'action shots' of soldiers pouring water into tanks, driving around in the mini-v's they have, and driving road graters..

They should swap they're little mini-vees for the USs' hummers. It looks like they're much better 'up-armored' than the US Chumvees..
